Just got my new Silver FT02 back on Saturday. I finally got everything set up and working. I must say for the very short time I have used it I really love it.

I mainly got it for its looks but it is also easier to use than my old case. For instance I don't have to worry about someone walking by and snapping my flash drive because the ports are on top of the case. Also, it is so silent compared to my old case. I'm only using the stock fans too. The loudest part on my computer now is the PSU. Simply amazing.

Oh, and cable management was a lot easier than my old case. I have virtually no wires in the front compartment and my PSU is a non-modular one. It was a bit of a tight fit behind the mobo tray though. xD

I've just ordered a silver FC-5 V2 so the black fan controller is temporary.

Lovely man, and I was just complaining about the lack of silver FT02s!

Do you have a drive in there, or is it stealth bay'd?

I now have $1900 worth of parts and no case to put them inside. Looong story short, is that the PC is supposed to fit under my custom desk. The desk has a pull out, adj usable work area (i.e. big (42"x14") keyboard tray) like an ergonomic desk lower shelf, but the original was defective so I couldn't measure before ordering. As it turns out, the case I picked, CoolerMaster ACTS 840 is 3/4"- 1" too tall. Unbelievable.

I would put it along side the desk, but, of course, there's no room (my apt. isn't that big). I really do like the case, but the only option is either move to a bigger place (would love to but no $$$$), or put it on top of the desk. I can't see that happening. So with a few days of RMA time already gone, I'm left with the other two cases I considered - the SilverStone FT02 or the CoolerMaster HAF-X.

I'll try to call the OEM's tomorrow to get some more info, but I need to get a replacement case at least by the end of the week = need to buy locally (if possible) or order by tomorrow night at the latest. I've spent the last four hours reading threads, etc. and still don't have enough info. ANY help is GREATLY appreciated.

This is my build list - ALL of which has already been delivered over the past week.
Motherboard = Asus P6X58D-E
CPU = I7-930 (will OC to 4.0-4.2GHz)
DDR3 = GSkill RipJaws 2000Mhz
CPU Heatsink = Thermalright Silver Arrow
PSU = Corsair HX-850 (mounted on the bottom - personal preference)
Graphics Card = MSI GTX460 Cyclone (will OC pretty hard).
HDDs = 1TB WD Black (OS/software), WD Black 2TB (data), and Samsung F3EG 2TB backup.
Audio = Asus Xonar DX2 PCI -E (will go in the bottom MB slot).
Optical = basic DVD-RW + DVD-Rom
Single 5.25" bay HDD hotswap rack = Thermaltake "Max 4"

Here are my questions re: the Silverstone FT02

(1) I read somewhere that the max motherboard width was 11", but the Asus P6X58D-E is 12"x9.6" which seems to be a common size. I checked a lot of the FT02 owner the sigs and the MB's listed are about the same size. Will the Asus MB fit? Is there going to be a issue with the sound card using the 3rd (bottom) PCI-E slot - especially optical drives & a hot swap rack in the top 5.25" bays? I need a card reader so that may go in the top 5.25" bay so 4/5 bays already gone. I'm really concerned it's going to be very tight or not work at all.

(2) Graphics card cooling. Originally, I wasn't concerned, but just tonight I read something about heatsink pipes not working w/ the 90 degree turn layout or it doesn't work well with cards that do not exhaust out the back, etc. There's a very good chance I go SLI, so all three PCI - E slots will be filled. Is there really an cooling issue w/ multiple cards or cards w/ heatsink pipes.

(3) The Silver Arrow should fit, but barely. It's the same height as most tower coolers (160mm). It does seem like a really tight fight as the case specs allow for up to 165mm. 5mm is NOT a lot of clearance so I want to make sure this will work. 99% sure that if a Noctua NH-D14 heat sink will fit, this will fit.

(4) HDD temps. I want all three HDDs in the case as well as the ability to easily hot swap out other HDD as I have a LOT of data. Plus I'm trying to convert my video collection to a hard drive to use w/my WDTV Live. I know you have one hot swap in the cage, but it's a pain to open the case each time. I seen some HDD temps above 40 which is several degrees C above what I have (at most I get 35). How are HDD temps?

I have an IcyDock external E-Sata enclosure, but it runs hot over time. How are HDD temps? For small transfers I can use the ICY dock (though it's pain since it's not tool less, but for bigger files or mass transfers I was planning on using the HDD bay rack or I suppose I could use the one provided. Any thoughts?

Given the height, the FT02 is my first choice since I know it will fit. I'm 99% sure the HAF-X will fit, but just barely - about 1/4" of clearance which is not much to say the least. Plus, I just read about the shorting issue w/ firewire hookup (THANK YOU VERY MUCH for whoever posted that warning! I use firewire for my Presonus Firebox DAC). Stil, there's no issue at all fitting everything in the HAF-X nor any HDD temp issues (hotswap rack asside).

Sorry for the long post, but it's quite a shock to see my entire build go down the drain because of one @&*# inch or less.

I'm going to get killed on return shipping & restocking (case, extra fans & who knows what) so I NEED the next case to work and I don't have much time to make a choice.

Thank a lot for the help.

1. Yes your motherboard will fit, it is a standard ATX size.

Proof: http://www.formfactors.org/developer...s%5Catx2_2.pdf
Quote:
3.1 Board Size
A full size ATX board is 12" wide by 9.6" deep (305mm x 244mm). This allows many ATX form factor
chassis to accept microATX boards as well.
2. The GPU Heatpipe problem is a rare one and has to do with poor or broken heatpipes, because they have no wick. You will be fine, or your GPU cooler is defective.

3. Yeah you will have no problem whatsoever with that cooler.

4. Your HDD temps will be fine, you will have an 180mm fan dedicated to them. If you have problems you can always zip tie another 120mm fan to it, but I can't imagine you having any.

When they say 12x9.6 that's height first then width. You'll be just fine.

The "non-reference" card heat problems are mostly FUD. I've had non-reference cards in my FT02 and they all maintained great temperatures. I've also had CFX 5850s in my FT02 and they kept plenty cool. The 180mm fans do a great job of GPU cooling.

The Arrow will fit no problem. I used to have a Cogage Arrow in my FT02 with completely adequet room between it and the side panel.

Yeah its a great case no doubt. Love mine.

Sadly, I can't post up pictures to join the club because I'm not sure if I'm going to keep it and mod it or get something else since I won't be watercooling anytime soon. Either way, I have to wait until I'm done before posting it up.

Same goes for my TJ09 as well.

Do you have a drive in there, or is it stealth bay'd?
Hehe, one of the reasons I got the silver over the black is that it is so rare. Well, that and I like the silver look better personally.

I actually plan on getting the SilverStone and using a 12.7mm optical drive with it.

That is unless I can buy some of those silver 5.25" faceplates from somewhere. I've never modded any case before so I am sure it would take me more than one try to get it right.

Either way I almost never use the optical drive so it isn't that big of a priority for me.
