The Official Silverstone Case Owners Club - Page 82

@ AMW1011 & farkle0079 - THANKS!

99% sure I'm going to get the FT02. Sorry for all the questions, but I have a few more. I'm going to call Silverstone & try to get some answers, but just to be safe here some follow up items:

(1) It seems that it will be a tight fit with my my DVD-Rom (Asus DVD-Rom) & DVD burner (Samnsung 203b. Will they fit okay length wise? My sound card will be in the last PCI-E slot. More importantly, my plan is to replace both with Blu-Ray versions burner soon and probably Blu-Ray reader (I like to copy directly). Since the length issue is supposed to be with "older" optical drives, anyone know if the new Blu-Ray optical drives have any length issues? I really don't want to sharply bend cables to fit a drive.

(2) Speaking of cables - would it be helpful to order some right angle (one end) Sata cables for the HDDs to make cable management easier? It looks that way from the pictures. Any other install tips (i.e. stuff to buy ahead of time) to make cable management things easier?

(3) I've been looking at card readers with a firewire and E-Sata port (the top ports are pathetic for this price - there should be both a firewire and E-Sata along w/ HD audio). I've narrowed it down to this Koutech and this Silverstone. Both are 3.5" (I tried to find a 5.25 with both, but to no avail) so do I need to order a 3.5" to 5.25" bay adaptor or is one included?

(4) Not a big issue (there's always trial & error), but any comments about where to put in what bays? I thought I'd put the card reader on top since that should be the shortest, then the two optical drives, then in the fourth or bottom fifth bay, the Thermaltake single bay HDD hot swap rack. It's an open rack so I thought put it last to get some air off the HDDs. I'll be using that the quite a bit rather than go through the hassle of the inside the case HDD swap.

I think that's it, but any other comments/thoughts are welcome. I need to get something by Friday so I'll probably order before the end of the day. Hopefully I can get one with the new AP fans - maybe getting the most popular configuration (black w/ window I guess), might increase the odds.

Thanks again for the replies and help.

I wonder if my soul will be an acceptable payment for the TJ11 when comes out. Speaking of, has anyone heard of an actual release date on that monster?

I haven't heard a date, but price is looking like $500. For that price, you should be able to unpack the components, put them in the case, and it automatically builds for you.

You can fit drives that are 7.25" in length before they reach the motherboard. In the upper most slot the drive plus power connector on the back have to be less than 7.25".

There's plenty of room behind the hard drives for standard straight sata cables. Right angle cables might be useful on the 5.25" drives though. That's where I use mine. As for other items to get, grab some to put into the backside of the motherboard tray. This will let you route cables much easier and manage them better.

No 5.25" to 3.5" adapter is included. I also got a card reader and ended up going with adapter.

I have my case setup where my DVD drive is up top followed by my fan controller and then media card drive. If I could I'd swap my fan controller and the optical dirve, but the rounded edges of the unibody frame won't accomodate the corners on my fan controller.

Definitely get the AP fans. Don't forget to post pics when you're done!

I guess they figure that it is too much a niche market for the case. If your air cooling then the FT02 will perform exactly the same. But if your watercooling, the TJ11 is a great choice. I guess they think they can get a lot more money from the WC community.

Honestly, I don't see myself getting it, even at $300. It is just like my TJ07, it should be watercooled, but I'm not about to do that again anytime soon.

That said, for $400-$500 the damn thing better be completely aluminum.

Again - THANKS for all the help.

I ordered the FT02 black w/window (most popular model) hoping that will increase my odds of getting the AP fans. I was thinking about silver actually, but whatever. I'd rather have the fans included. HOPEFULLY, the case will be shipped today & I'll get it Friday. I just made the "cutoff" for same day shipping (no guarantee ) & paid for "rush" processing. At least NewEgg was cool about the RMA - they waived the 15% restocking fee (all I did was open the box, take it out, and go "oh @&$*!).

I bought three of these round 18" Sata 6.0GB/s cables for the hotswap rack and DVD drives, and these round 10" Sata 6.0GB/s cables for the three HDDs. The flat ribbon ones are a pain in the rear to route/turn so hopefully these will be better. I probably should have grabbed another for the hot swap. Oh well.

Still have to decide on a card reader - need to call ICYDock to see if the Silverstone reader listed above will be an okay power source. Quite a few comments on NewEgg about fried HDDs when using the power connections. I guess it's fine for Silverstone external cases, but I was told that it was "non standard." I'm going to order the new

. LOL - NewEgg has it for $20, but want $15 shipping. Nice. I'll throw in the cable clips farkle0079 (thanks) suggested and maybe some ties so I can get free ship.

Still need to RMA all the extra fans I bought, etc. I also need to buy an 120mm to replace the front 140mm fan that comes with the Silver Arrow heat sink. My original plan was to reverse the rear to intake so clearing the ram wasn't an issue. I'm thinking this NoiseBlocker PWM fan but maybe I'll just use the Noctua NF-P12 I already have for now.

OH - almost forgot. Given that I have this huge heatsink w/ a fairly complex mounting system, would it be better to install the CPU & heatsink first, then mount the motherboard inside the case, or just put the bracket on the back?

I hope that's it. Gah...what a disaster.

I will, though it may take a bit of time to get it looking as good as some of the other builds posted earlier.

I like to think of our little club not as a competition, but more as a place to share our builds regardless of current building skill level. Plus, I at least, enjoy seeing the evolution of other peoples builds as they hone their skills, and add upgrades. Can't speak for others, but I sure won't judge negatively the hard work you put into building your rig. Feel free to post pics of your rig at any stage I say .

Motherboard first, heatsink last otherwise you will never be able to screw it in completely. Also the FT02 is a case where I recommend installing the PSU after the motherboard and heatsink.

I'm not sure what motherboard you have, but I highly recommend putting the HSF backplate on it before installing it into the case. The rear backplate hole doesn't work with all motherboards (my P6T6 is a good example). After you install the mobo route and connect the 8pin CPU cable to the motherboard, but don't install the PSU yet; you'll need that space to install the heatsink. After the 8pin connector is squared away be sure to put the fan clips into the Arrow and then install it. Lastly, slide the PSU into place and screw it down. The velcro PSU strap really isn't needed, but you can add it if you want. I also installed the PSU corner bracket.
