Shader Model 3 Emulator

Thread Starter
Ok so, I have concluded that this little X800 I have in my computer can handle a lot of stuff. And it has gone from using it because I don't really got the cash for a new GPU to seeing what it can handle (and I still don't got the cash for a new GPU). Now, apparently you need SM 3.0 support to run Farcry 2, I was wondering if there is something out there that would allow me to emulate SM3 on my SM2 card. I know that it will probably cause a huge FPS drop (along with the fact I'm running a game on a card that can't really handle it in the first place, but the objective is to be a little above the fail factor for the Crysis PIII thread (I personally thought it was a fun idea).

In the long run I am looking for something to emulate Shader Model 3 on my Shader Model 2 card. Or maybe something that would allow me to run Shader Model 3 apps with shader model 2.

For all of those people thinking about flaming me or just saying "buy a new GPU" or going on with your immature methods. Just save it and waste your bandwidth somewhere else.

That is all.

as much as i hate to say it, its highly impossible, shader models are a combo of hardware and software support. really i wanted to try bioshock with my last card x300 lol. but lack of support is impossible.

imho even if there was, how could you play at <10 fps? and looking really bad and fugly, it would just ruin your experience of farcry 2

I'm the guy who was playing postal 2 on a 400 MHz Dell optiplex with a TNT2 GPU and loving all 12 FPS of it.

And I'm gonna be getting hold of a X1950 soon. All it matters on is if I can fix it or not!

Hmm, FC2 played quite decently on my 780G integrated (while my 2900XT was fussy)

Shader 3.0 emulation is not too possible- previous versions with the CPU or faking = yes, but SM3.0 is extremely complex and emulation would be too slow for comfort.

All in all, get a 4670 instead if you are able to. Smacks the X1950 everywhere, and is still cheap.

i know you are going to hate me for this, but why spend money on game that will run (if at all) like cr@p, just spend money on a used cheap Shader Model 3 GFX card, and then you'll have all the Shader Model 3 gaming experience out there

You can emulate SM 3.0 in software with something like SwiftShader, but since SwiftShader does all rendering in software, it's going to be slower than hell.

Err... Swiftshader is still SM2.0. And already that slow.

3.0 is regarded as mostly impossible to do, since fragment/shader code has the potential to get much longer and complex.
