At water I get 60+fps lol, its just in the city it drops.

All maxed out on my old GTX260 I managed a constant 25-35 range. Now with a more powerful card I get less fps <25 sometimes teen? Hmmmm

GTA IV is CPU dependent. The 4870 X2 does not do as bad as you claim because in certain situations I have seen fps over 120+ but normal gameplay fps depends on the conditions , location , weather , time of day etc... It's always playable for me and that means 30-40+. Rarely do I ever see it under 30.

Exactly, which makes me wonder, is something wrong with my HD4870x2? I should easily be sitting in 30-40fps which is playable.

Can I ask what res and exact settings you play on bud? Cheers.

GTA is only utilising 50-60% of each GPU in game, which is why I am seeing such poor fps. Is this a known problem on the 4870x2 or multi GPU setups?

Poor programming indeed. This game is so CPU dependant I'm on the verge of upgrading the CPU just to keep the game above 30Fps at all time, I see low 20s-mid 20Fps once in a while.

Heres a few examples I dug up to show how this game is really affected by CPU speed. I will compare it to Crysis Warhead Benchmark, as its the only game benchmark I have other than GTA4.

Crysis Warhead Custom settings 16XA/F (all set to Enthusiast with motion blurr off) so pretty much maxed settings

2.4Ghz CPU
DirectX 9.0c CUSTOM 1X @ Map: ambush @ 0 1680 x 1050 AA 0xx
==> Framerate [ Min: 20.52 Max: 37.76 Avg: 31.06 ]

3.4Ghz CPU

DirectX 9.0c CUSTOM 1X @ Map: ambush @ 0 1680 x 1050 AA 0xx
==> Framerate [ Min: 20.16 Max: 37.57 Avg: 31.31 ]

Almost zero effect on the game from a 1ghz OC.

Now GTA4 and its nearly useless benchmark tool

Big difference in game play, at 3.4 ghz I rarely see FPS in the 20 range, rarely, at 2.4 I see them all the time, very unplayable for me at 2.4 Ghz for my liking.

I always recommend loading it with FRAPS running and using it to bench while you play...

It records min - max - average and I think it gives a much more accurate description of what kind of performance you get in game rather then the benchmark tool.

I can't climb onto the helicopter by pressing space repeatedly. It changes the view for a split second nothing else. This happens for both final missions. Fraps trick fixed it. I'm also annoyed by the "out of comission" mission. I always seem to end up either dead or destroying my helicopter or missing the ramp. I got close to the cutscene once or twice.

true but I would have to play the same exact way everytime I wanna bench against something and do the same exact things, drive the same path etc... I just use fraps to see when and if it drops below 25fps
