Nvidia drivers causing BSOD

Thread Starter
I've been searching all evening and couldn't find a thread related to my problem. Nvidia video drivers are causing the OS to go BSOD. How do I know? The OS runs fine until I install drivers. On restart the computer crashes - sometimes before logon, sometimes after; depends on the driver version.

I have a fresh install of Vista Ultimate x64 w/ SP1. It's legit and the only other things installed are fresh nforce drivers, Nero 9 and Firefox 3.0. Hardware config:

eVGA 680i LT/SLI mainboard w/ native Realtek sound
Q6600 2.4GHz quad CPU
Corsair XMS 800MHz 1Gb x4 RAM
eVGA 8800GT 512Mb x2 in SLI
Western Digital 250Gb SATA 3.0 partitioned 140/110
Samsung SATA opticals

So far I've flashed the mainboard BIOS to the latest version and tried the following driver versions. I'm running stock GPUs, version 512-P3-N802-AR.

178.13_VISTA64
175.19_geforce_winvista_64bit_english_whql
178.24_geforce_winvista_64bit_english_whql
178.24_geforce_winvista_64bit_international_whql
180.42_geforce_winvista_64bit_english_beta

Not sure what else you all need in the way of details. Any HELP would be very much appreciated. Flamers and "Yeah I got that problem too" please just read and no typee - Thanks.

un-install using a drivercleaner in safe mode. then install drivers while in safe mode.

I have the Vista Ultimate 64bit SP1 with all updates and NVIDIA Driver 178.24 installed and no probs as in BSOD. Install the WIN drivers for your card and see if that makes a difference.

@killer...been there done that for each version of the driver

@gunderman...what do you mean Win driver?
Uninstall your NVIDA Drivers and reboot. Windows will then offer to install their drivers for the card(s). Do that and see if that solves the problem.

I've done that about a bazillion times. Windows installs generic VGA drivers; doesn't even recognize the cards or ask to download drivers.
Interesting Windows does not recognize card and the card causes BSOD when you force the system to recognize the card by installing the official drivers.

Check to see if your cards are well seated and cabling is ok.

It looks like maybe one of the cards is faulty.

Try running with one card at a time (take out one then the other from the slot) with drivers installed.

If one fails RMA if you can.

What kind of PSU are you running and it is powerful enough to run SLI?

1. Both cards run fine in XP
2. Cards were both seated well
3. Only one card is in the machine right now
4. Will try the other card in the slot and see if it makes a diff, doubt it though

Forgot to mention the PSU is a PC Power & Cooling SLI certified 610W.

Also, I swapped out cards and Windows still isn't recognizing a hardware change. Going to try installing the drivers with this card. Be back in a few to report no change
