close to max power

im putting together a second computer with some of my old parts and i found i dont have a power supply... so i grabbed one from an old junk computer. It works with a simple setup of a hard drive, mother board (built in vid) cpu ect just enough to run.

Would it be safe to use this if the watts used are about 225 out of the max 235

Well, I suppose you can try it, I got lucky on pushing an old psu once. I think it would be pretty safe to try, then check the voltages of course and if it blows... then it blows I guess.. Do you need this psu for anything else?

EDIT: I had a max 230 on my compaq with a 2800+ 1x512 stick of DDR, dvd-r/+r/rw and a cd-rw drive (120gb hdd). with a 60mm hsf and an 80mm case fan =)

EDIT #2: If you have the money, definatly go getta cheapy off of neweeg.

Actually, i would say no, because psu's dont like stress at all. It can barely push 235 for a coupel of seconds, so how do u expect it to push 225 for as long as ur gona push it? No, if i were u, id go to a junkyard, or a local school and rip a better psu out. Trust me, a 235 w psu wont be enough for that. Simply wont push it - or if it will, not for long for sure.

Very good idea. I know a surplus store, not far from me, that sells a 450w Enermax dual fan with golden covers for 19.99 CAD. I bet you can find a very similar deal if you looked well.
Simply not worth skimping on it and ruining all your stuff.
