overclocking Q9450

Thread Starter
I took my Q6600 out the other day and put my Q9450 in. I'm gonna be honest. I didn't really overclock my Q6600 myself. I found some settings for 3.6GHz that worked for someone else and used those. I figured I'll go ahead and do all the baby steps with the Q9450.

Well, I'm baby-stepping and I'm having trouble getting my processor stable at 3.12GHz.

My Q9450's VID is 1.25V. Batch number is L816A760. CPU-Z says my I have 1.248V running through my CPU right now. I don't remember what it is set at in my BIOS, but I believe it's three notched north of 1.25V. I want to say NB voltage is 1.41V and FSB termination voltage is at 1.22V. I'm not sure what other voltages I should be playing with and in what priority.

I'd like to think I can reach 3.6GHz with this processor on air. Are my expectations too lofty? I'd appreciate any help.

You should be able to reach 3.6GHz on air with little problems. What might hold you back is the room temp.

On mine I've set on BIOS 1.2875v and it drops to 1.248v idle/load. EDIT:1.2375vID but it worked at 1.200v at stock
My other settings are: 1.52vNB, 1.28v VTT and PLL is set on auto. (This may change alot for your mobo as mine is VERY picky with voltages)

Under idle mine is around 39/37/32/31 (the IHS is not placed correctly most likely)
Under prime 95 small FFTs it goes around 63C (screenshot on sig)

Core Temp says my temps are 39, 37, 39 and 39 right now. When I stress it, they shoot up to 50, 49, 50 and 50.

I'll go ahead and restart and up some voltages to see if I can't get Prime95 testing stable before I leave at noon.

It appears my motherboard doesn't like one of the RAM dividers. When I upped my FSB to 400, I brought my memory speed down to whatever was next-slowest to 1000. It failed to POST. I put it back up to 1000 and here I am. I'll run Prime95 for a few more minutes before reaching a little higher.

CPU-Z says my core voltage is 1.264V. What's the maximum safe voltage on these 45nm chips?

That was fun.

I'm having a hard time getting my system stable with a 400 MHz FSB. I upped the core voltage this time. I don't remember where it's at in BIOS, but CPU-Z says it's 1.272 now. I believe my NB voltage is 1.53. I'm not sure how far I can push that. My FSB termination voltage is 1.26 in BIOS. No clue what the limit is on that one either. If someone could clue me in to what my outer limits are for each voltage, it would put my mind at ease as I raise each one. Also what other voltages I could play with and their limits.

You're doing good, it's inadvisable to go over 1.3625vCore after the vdroop.

Don't go much higher than that on the vNB, avoid going over 1.55v. The termination voltage (VTT) is what kills 45nm CPUs if you push it too far, stay away from anything over 1.32v (And thats already a bit too high).

Try keeping the memory at the same speed when overclocking the CPU, so you know if something is unstable it is not the ram that is causing it. After you achieve a stable OC, you can take care of the ram if you want.

That's the thing about the RAM. I ram Prime95 for 10 minutes without any errors at 3.12GHz so I decided to push it a little further. My RAM was at whatever 390*1.2 is (5:4 divider). When I upped my FSB to 400, I brought my RAM down to the next-lowest divider and my system wouldn't POST. I put it back up to 1000 and it did, but my system wasn't stable. I put all my RAM settings to auto for now and I'm using the 1:1 divider for a 800 MHz. This should rule out my RAM completely.

I'm currently running Prime95. It's been stable so far for four minutes. I'll see if it lasts ten minutes before I push to 410.

Thanks for the help, Dragoon. Keep it coming!

I've pushed it to 410. I think backing my RAM down to the 1:1 divider and putting everything RAM-related (except voltage being at 2.06) on auto really helped things out.

I'm not pushing things too quickly by only running Prime95 for ~10 minutes before pushing things a little further, am I? I figure once I hit 3.6GHz and stress test for 24 hours, I'll really be able to fine tune things.

OK, ran Prime95 for about 20 minutes at 410 and pushed things to 420. I haven't adjusted voltages. My Vcore is 1.29 something in BIOS, 1.272 in CPU-Z. My NB voltage is 1.55, termination is at 1.26. I set PLL to auto.

I'm going to let Prime95 run through the 8K tests before pushing things to 430.

I'm positive my RAM was holding me back before. I just booted with a 430 FSB with no issues. I'm running Prime95 until the first dozen tests are finished again before I push things further. I still haven't touched my voltage.
