Xbox 360, Can or Can't use VLC? How?

Thread Starter
Hey,

I'm trying to get right codec's on the xbox 360 for my roommate's. I've got video streaming from my laptop's 1tb hd. And i'm trying to make it readily available to the xbox 360 on my roommates 47" tv. I'd rather not haul my laptop to the tv and hook up it's hdmi every single time...

Rather since my laptop = Vista home premium, and the xbox can see it's list of movies I have rip'd legally to it, however I'd like to rip in higher quality, but in order to do it, the xbox 360 needs a better codec package then default.

Is there any way to get a codec package or vlc player (Like I have portable for my usb thumb drives on the go), for the xbox 360's ?

Thanks!

Not to my knowledge, Xbox 360's have a media center that your allowed to stream music and video's that wmp can easily play from the pc of your choice direct to the xbox.

TOS ? Where in it might it be against it? Because It's my own media, my own data, my own legally purchased materials. And i'm in Canada if that means anything. Because I know alot of the writes of legally owning owners in the states are being infringed on...

Anyhoo, if you or anyone can still help me, highly appreciated!

***EDIT***

Adding on, Basic concept. Riping my own dvd's to mpeg, or h264 (I think it is), format's. Higher qual xvid's, and better, etc. Even some i'm up converting manually to 1280x720 for a variant of 720p. The video's are about 2-4gb's each alone when said and done. But I don't want to down convert to 500mb - 1gb approx just so I can play them on the xbox 360's downstairs.

I know I can just pop the dvd's in, but i'd like it to involve less movement of the body, that's what walks and work is for, home is for relaxing and simplicity.

TOS for what? OCN or 360? I see this as a legitimate question and, though I don't know the answer, I hope someone can help Le_Loup.

i don't think this is against ToS. um as to my understanding, without modification to that xbox360 via soft/firmware, the 360's support is limited. Here is a page explaining the whole lot. http://blogs.msdn.com/xboxteam/archi...yback-faq.aspx

Use a program called TVversity. It will automatically convert the files on your laptop OTA to the xbox 360, so you do not have to worry about formats.

With Tvversity, would it downgrade the resolution???? I'd rather not convert down to format's that look great on 20-30" tv's and see it stretched worse on a 47" lcd tv....

i believe there are a bunch of programs that you can use, tvversity is one of them, transcode 360 used to be one not sure anymore. The way its done is there is no downgrade in the resolution it converts it on the fly. The downfall of this is that it needs a pc fast enough to handle the encoding and the functions of watching some videos are limited. I didnt bother doing that and i just ripped all my video's to .wmv format and played it that way or .avi.

Umm, if you get the updates.. since the September 2007 update, you should be able to play videos. I play Divx/AVI/Xvid/WMV/MPEG all from my 4gb usb key directly plugged into my xbox 360. My buddy never had internet so he can't do it on his. Look into the September 2007 OFFICIAL update for the xbox 360.

Just do what I do and convert your movies to WMVHD and the xbox plays them nicely.
