Upgrading my 3 year old rig - $500 budget

Thread Starter
Hi fellas! I've been getting the itch to upgrade to a sweet C2D system for, well, the past 2 years, but now I think the prices are right to pull the trigger. The last straw was playing Fallout 3 on medium and noticing that the draw distance was utterly hideous, with enemies getting the drop on me before my friggin graphics card had even rendered them. I'm dropping AMD entirely (obviously), but I'll be recycling the hard drives, monitor, DVD drive, sound card, a Tuniq Tower 120, and the power supply. Here's the options I'm looking at right now:

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 - $165

Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P - $130 (20 MIR)

RAM: Mushkin 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) - $58 (20 MIR)

Video Card: ASUS EAH4850 Radeon HD 4850 512MB - $160 (30 MIR)

Total - $513 ($443 after rebates)

I'm also considering this Newegg combo special for $266:
ASUS P5Q SE PLUS LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard AND
Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 Wolfdale 3.16GHz BX80570E8500 - Retail

----------

Thoughts? Will this basic setup last me another 3 years for basic 3D gaming (with some room to grow)? Suggestions for improvement/cheaper prices? Am I really that stupid to recycle this 450W power supply? Should I suck it up and wait for Black Friday, knowing that half the time the really insane deals are long gone by time I get around to looking at them?

Thanks for all your help - I appreciate it.

Nice build. I wouldn't bother with the combo though. The Gigabyte board is superior. Anything higher than an E8400 is for pure overclocking. Also go for a Visiontek 4850 for their lifetime warranty. You may be able to recycle that PSU too...Just don't overclock it and I'm sure it will be fine.
If you want to save money, people on OCN are always selling their stuff.

Ok lets see.
I would get the newegg deal, as the e8500 is a beast, i personally had my e0 @ 4.2 with almost no effort. And newegg ships e0 most of the time i think.

The rig should last at least 2 years, when u need more GPU power you can simply add another 4850.
Let me grab a link for cheaper ddr2 800, i found some for 50-25 MIR. And if its in your budget, get the 1gb hd4580. They are much better.

Get rid of that PSU. get your self a nice 650-750w. (I have 1 if you decide to go this route).

Some different RAM:
OCZ reaper 50-20 =30

Corsair 55-30=25

I too would go for the combo deal. Thats pretty cheap for an e8500. And the P5Q are a great series of mobos.
I would go with the sapphire HD4850 -

Thats a great 4850. I would choose the visiontek though becasue he wants it to last 2-3years, beyond what most gamers want their cards to last.

Either Card is a great choice though, and you cant go wrong with it.

True. But Visiontek customer service isn't so great. Plus there are no heatsinks on the PWMs on that visiontek card...which is concerning considering how hot they get. If you buy that one I highly reccomend you buy some RAMsinks to put on the PWMs. But whatever 4850 the OP gets he can't really lose - they're a great series of cards.

Indubitably my good sir. It really depends on his personal preference.
