asus maximus II formula - will it support ddr3?

Thread Starter
I've been reading up on memory for a bit now, because I'm having issues overclocking my ram and Ive noticed that many p45 boards support ddr3. the maximus formula is said to only support ddr2, yet in my bios, I have the option of overclocking my ddr2 ram to 1600 mhz (mind you this is not stable, but the option exists). I was under the impression that only ddr3 would reach those speeds

also, when I load up memtest in windows, it recognizes my ram as 6gb of ddr3, instead of 4 gbs of ddr2
1) what would cause that problem? and how do I fix it?
2) is this evidence that the board will infact support ddr3?

The memory mis-recognition could be down to an old BIOS. Have you updated it?

also could be an un-supported memory module.

It only supports ddr2, so something's being mis-read.

no, it does not support DDR3... it just allow you to overclock all the way to that speed... its similar to anything else in the BIOS... if you notice, voltages can be set way about what the max should be... its up to user discretion
