I guess I wasn't that clear in my post. I said wait for Deneb because everything will be cheaper. We won't know which route will make the most sense until then. I highly doubt it will be the LGA775 route because Intel is no longer using that socket. The only potential upgrades from a Q9550 would be a Q9650 or an extreme-class Penryn.

Then again, we aren't sure where Intel is going with the Bloomfield LGA1366. I've heard some of their future enthusiast-class processors will be on a different socket. If this is true, then going with a Bloomfield won't make a lot of sense as far as future upgrade paths are concerned. We won't know how true those rumors are until the future actually arrives.

With Deneb, AMD is also going with a new socket. I believe it's AM3. I haven't really followed AMD's plans, but I remember reading something about AM2/AM2+ having a similar lifespan to LGA775. With AM3 coming out, this obviously isn't the case.

If these microprocessor companies are releasing a new socket with every other new family of processors they release, it'll make it an upgrader's nightmare. And the "best" path to take in my opinion is one that offers future upgrade potential. And it's safe to say going with a Q9550 is easily the worst of the three options in that regard.

ok i totally agree. id like something to future proof. i mean one of my drives just started clicking and my mobo id like to replace since it doesnt even recognize my 4 gigs of ddr 800.. sounds like im better off making a "sidegrade" and adding a new vidy card and waiting till our economy (and intel ) decides to stick to a socket for more than 16 months.

i still have to upgrade something.

i mean i do 3d rendering so its either fix the stuff thats broken or just kill everything altogether.

i wasnt the only one upping to a q9550 either. at least in terms of enthusiasts.

waiting for deneb provides a new dilemna if its within 6 months

I don't think your motherboard supports quads so you would have to basically get a new system regardless of which route you take.

my mobo just blew out one of my raid 0 drives ( 150gb raptor)

sooooooooooooooooooo pissed.

if u look on extremeoverclock it discusses how the p5w dh shuts off hds a tad prior to "full off"... in other words ud still see the "shutting down" screen and youd hear the drive's "click off' OR " PARK" as it were.

anyway im on my ma's thinkpad and im rly bummed out

reaching out to teh internets.
