you can cut paperwork by say... 40% if you knock off 40% of the warranty time.

Or I could buy a different brand for around the same price, get the better warranty, and save that money for an SSD-based storage solution in three years instead.

Well, at the moment, every little thing you do adds up. Nobody is saying that the warranty cut is the sole saviour and cost-cutter. Its most likely part of a much larger, company-wide incentive to reduce costs.

I'm sure they have also laid off some staff, for example. Of course those things are not particularly newsworthy compared to something which affects the end consumers, such as the warranty cut.
