I have q6600 at 3.2ghz. At idle it is around 45c. When i ran prime95 it hit 80c, so i quickly shut it down. Why would my cpu do this? What is the problem?

The heatsink you have may not be attached properly
There may be to much/to little thermal paste
Your ambient temperate may be really high
You may not have enough airflow inside your case.

Hmm...thermal paste may be the issue. Got a little "trigger happy" with it. Ugh how would i remove the paste from it now?

Sand blaster.

I hear a lot of people using rubbing alcohol to remove the paste. I haven't tried it myself. I just OC'ed my Q6600 and on 100% full load it tops out at 51.3C.

Take the cooler off and start over. Use rubbing alcohol and q-tips to remove the old thermal compound. There are diagrams and videos galore on how to properly apply thermal compound. I suggest read/watching them. Good luck!

You have to remove the heatsink and clean off the thermal Paste. You can use alcohol and a lint free rag of some sort(coffee filters work for me) to clean up the mess.

Also when applying the fan to the xigmatek cpu cooler i bent some of those metal fins on the heatsink. I did bend them back again would that have any effect?

Just use a little bit of high concentration Isotropy Alcohol (85% or higher) and a clean rag or paper towel and gently wipe the old thermal paste off of the CPU and heatsink.

Dont use a sandblaster.

No bending the fins and bending them back would have no bad effect.

Also make sure you put the alcohol on the rag and not directly onto the CPU.
