Opinion question on SLI'ing 8800GT AMP!

Thread Starter
Hello

I'm using a widescreen - 19 inch monitor 1440x900 resolution. I currently use 1 Zotac 512MB 8800GT AMP! edition graphics card. They have discontinued the 8800GT as everyone can see and suddenly it has become hard to find Zotac AMP!'s for sale. I always intended to SLI the 8800GT, but now I'm wondering if I should bother.

My question is...I can get a used 8800GT AMP! for 100 - 120 used. Should I buy it now and SLI the cards? or should I simply keep using the single 8800GT AMP! and sell it when the GTX 280's come down in price? (is the 280 overkill for 1440x900 res??)

Current system is:
e8400 oc'ed to 3.6ghz
4 gigs ddr2 1066
Zotac 512MB 8800GT AMP!

Thanks guys....and sorry if this is a repeat.

Yes, SLI would be overkill for that resolution. But you should still get another one for SLI. Those cards really are great, and you can find them here used every now and then.

Just get a 22" monitor, and you'll really see that SLI setup shine!

SLI the 8800GT. At your monitor resulution a GTX 280 is overkill and really a SLI set-up since two 8800GT gets you very close to a GTX 280 performance. So now, the question becomes, which solution is cheapest!

lolwut.

if you are doing fine with that card, then keep it for a while and get a 260 or a 280. If you are having frame problems even after oc-ing your card a bit go for the SLI route.

I still think it's too soon to adopt the 260's, IMO.

Prices are high. Give them about 6 more months. In the meantime, what you'll want is a bigger monitor and to SLI the card you currently have.

Think of it this way, the monitor will go with whatever cards you go with, and you'll only see gains in performance. And until the 260s are cheaper, you might be very satisfied with the performance of SLI.

Also, you probably won't be able to overclock that card a tremendous amount more. They're already the highest stock clocks available in the 8800 series. So the chances of them going much higher and you seeing a difference is slim.

Well prices are comming down on the 280gtx soon because of the 'new' cards by nvidia and ATI. So i would wait and see how those prices turn out before making a decision.
8800gt in SLI is not bad, but i always find upgrading to SLI to be pointless. A 280gtx is more reliable in terms of frame rates. And no i dont think it is overkill. But the price of it compared to another 8800gt is not justified, unless you have cash to burn, but i doubt that.
If i was being honest, I personally prefer Nvidia, but i would consider a 4870 1gb instead. Its a 1/3rd cheaper than a 280gtx and the perfomance is almost the same, sometimes better, especially in the source engine games like term fortress 2, counter strike, half life and left 4 dead.
A 4870 1gb i would recomend

Does the 9800GT work with the 8800GT? You can pick one up and reflash the bios if you want to sli.

Personally I'd just use the 8800GT. 1440x900 is not a demanding res at all.

No it's not. 3-Way SLI is entirely different.

The 9800GT and the 8800GT are the same thing physically. They simply have different BIOS'es. 3-Way SLI would also mean you'd need another connector, the GT only has one...
