VirtualBox is really good VM software. I highly suggest using it instead of VMware Server on a desktop.

VirtualBox is fine. I prefer VMware since it has a few more features, and I have a license for it.

Well, other than that, not much. For us cheapskates here though ( ) that's pretty important. ;P

It's also open source.

If you really want to get down and dirty with linux, try linux from scratch...I'm currently doing mine...it takes a while but you learn a bunch. Compared to gentoo it is alot harder imo.

But if you want something a little more controllable but not as intense, I recommend Arch Linux.

Ok, a quick questions. Lets say I figure out how to configure something or make something work in a virtual machine (hardware related). Will I be able to follow those same steps to get it working if I install the OS for real?

it depends what level of configuration you are talking about. You will most likely need different drivers on a real install than a vm..you may have to compile your kernel differently.

for the most part though it should be about the same

Couldn't help noticing your Rig is call WC FTW. Is that Warcraft FTW? (Hopefully WC3)?

Also, in VMware, can I copy a file from my desktop into the virtual OS?
