So, the computer my family uses is an old Dell with a 3ghz P4 that I've upgraded with 1.5gb of RAM and a 7600GT. I've finally convinced them to upgrade it after almost loosing my mind having to use the paper-weight over Thanksgiving Break.

Right now, I'm planning on keeping the monitor, keyboard/mouse, 430w Thermaltake PSU, Evga 7600GT (my brother mostly games on his xbox), and the 160gb and 80gb hard drives. I also have a copy of Vista Ultimate I'll give them. Everything else will be replaced, and I've selected as follows:

E2200: $70

GIGABYTE GA-G31M-ES2L: $55

COOLER MASTER Elite 340: $50

XIGMATEK HDT-SD964: $18

SAMSUNG 22X DVD Burner: $25

SUPER TALENT INTAIN1MCR All-in-one Card Reader: $9

For Ram, I'll just order whatever is the best deal with rebates at the time I order. There are great deals on Super Talent and OCZ 2x1gb kits right now - both for DDR2 800 and 1066 speeds.

Do you guys have any suggestions? The build is currently under $300 shipped, and I'd like to keep it that way.

Edit: I've got another question though: The psu that I was planning to use is the current Thermaltake 430w. But now, my brother wants a 9800GT for Christmas... Do you think the 430 watts would still be enough, or should I grab a 500w one?

No point for the xigmatek cooler just use stock...you can reach decent speeds and tbh the extra ghz you might pull out won't make a difference.

if you like that case its good...but go cheaper save some money...they won't notice.

other than that what they need it for its fine.

For $300 for a mostly non gaming computer, with parts studied and chosen by yourself I think is great. OCZ make great RAM (I have some), so does GigaByte make great and reliable MOBOs, I have a CoolerMaster case and they are great, Xigmatek is a well rated aftermarket CPU fan and Samsung is doing wonderful things with their drives.

Since the computer won't really be for gaming your choice of CPU is also good, but if you were to have some more cash, maybe that is the only thing I would upgrade, so it does not bottleneck a future GPU upgrade.

Yeah, I figured that it'd be a good bit quieter though, and might allow me to drop the voltage a little bit (my family is a bunch of green-freaks, so power savings are excellent).

I'm not concerned about a future gpu upgrade really. They don't game on it much, and a 9800GT-type-card wouldn't be bottlenecked with a decent OC on the E2200. I mean, If I can drop a few bucks on good ram deals when I order, and if prices drop a little I might be able to grab an E5200.

Thanks, but I am looking for new, and I'm looking at keeping things small, so an mATX board is preferable.

AMD build would be cheaper and more energy efficient:
$50 X2 4850e 2.5GHz 45W: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103299
$40 AR 740G Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813186151

Those two use less power combined than just the Intel 65w TDP CPU. Based on your needs, it shold be plenty fast enough.
Once again...

I back DuckieHo on the AMD build. Maybe this combo, and then you can drop the 7600GT to save even more power.
