should I get a RAID together?

Thread Starter
well basically I wanted to learn a little about RAID 0 and see if I could set one up.

First of all can my motherboard RAID?

My current 2 hard drives are different sizes and brands but I'm not sure if this is a problem. They are:

Maxtor 6V200E0 200GB 7200RPM SATA-2
Seagate ST3250310AS 250GB 7200RPM SATA-2

So is this possible? or will i need to purchase another one of either of those hard drives..

thanks
Alan

It's possible.... however, the array size will be 400GB and performance will be limited by the slower drive (but will still be better than either drive alone).
Once again...

yes to it supporting it. Integrated SATA 3Gb/s with RAID function
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/...ProductID=2551

if you set up a raid 0 it will default the 250 to 200 so you would have a 400g hd for raid 0. then you would have 50g left over for an extended partition.
most would reccomend raiding to gether 2 identical drive for best proformance.
but with the set up you have now you will see an improvement over a single drive.

ah I always though if you went raid 0 with says two 200g HDDs i would onyl get 200gs of space.

i think i may consider doing this now...how do I go about doing it?

That would be raid 1.

As for setting up raid, you would have to go into your BIOS and enable the use of raid. Then when you reboot it should show you some sort of option to load the RAID utility. From there you go ahead and setup your raid config. Reboot, install your OS, Enjoy.

One other note about Raid 0, it may be fast, but it has zero redudency. Meaning if you lose 1 disk, you lose the entire array = all data on those disks lost.
