hal.dll

post #1 of 11
Thread Starter
My dads friends pc is having an issue with this .dll file.

Basically when windows is starting up he gets this error message

Code:
Windows could not start because missing or corrupt

<windows root>\\system32\\hal.dll

re install or copy above
his friend said he was uninstalling some programs before this happened.

formatting and installing XP again is possible...

What should I do ?

thanks
Alan

You could take out his hard drive, and put it in another maching (using the same version windows) copy the file from a working computer and put it in the system32 folder, or even try doing a repair from the windows disk.

Have you tried repairing the boot files with the XP disk?

Could always give this a try too

* Boot from your XP Setup CD and enter the Recovery Console
* Run "Attrib -H -R -S" on the C:\\Boot.ini file
* Delete the C:\\Boot.ini file
* Run "Bootcfg /Rebuild"
* Run Fixboot

I remember my dad having this problem aswell and I think he used something like spotmau power suite to replace the file.. Could be a sign of a dying HD also though...

EDIT: ^^ Nvm, too slow ;] His way seems way easier ;x

I was thinking of doing that first method there but how do I actually do a windows repair with the disk? because if you push R to do a repair it just takes me into the windows recovery console which I don't think is the right place

Do you think that first method would fix it?
Meh...

Well, you have to repair windows using the "R" when you put in the CD.
If you have another computer around, just download the file using the link overclocktheshock posted, and put it in the system32 folder. It just sucks haveing to tare apart computers, I just had to do it with a Netdetect.com file for a friends computer.
