Going to return today but...

any thoughts on what is causing this video card to screw up? I got an EVGA Superclocked 9800gt for my birthday on Monday, installed it on Tuesday, briefly ran Crysis, Bioshock, Company of Heroes and Battlefield. All was fine. Ran 3dmark06 and it froze during the cpu section, ran 3dmark several times afterward with no problems, also ran ATI to scan for artifacts with no problems. Played Bf2 on Wednesday night for 30 minutes, no problems.
Last night, I could play nothing for more than a couple of minutes without artifacts and freezes. Even Firefox looks like crap now. I uninstalled the drivers through XP, restarted, ran driver sweeper, restarted and reinstalled the latest driver from Nvidia and did the same thing with an earlier driver, same problems. I underclocked it way below the stock speeds and still had the same trouble. The PSU is an 600 watt OCZ about one year old. Earlier that day I defragmented the HD.
Thankfully, I will not have to mail the stupid card and wait for a return. Any thoughts on what may be the problem would be greatly appreciated.

I still have the 8600gt and I have another system but it is up for sale. I could try putting it in there anyway.

It looks like the video card to me, since you underclocked and it's still doing the same thing, so it can't be a heating problem and you installed clean and latest NVIDIA drivers, so it's not a driver problem. RMA the card.

Looks like you may have gotten a lemon. Try out your old video card just to make sure though.

If it is the card, I'd first try taking it back if you bought it in-store. If not, then it's probably RMA time.

PS: Did you make sure to connect the PCI-e power input? Also, have you checked the temps on the card? Excess heat is a common cause of artifacting.

I returned the EVGA card and got an XFX 9800gt. The XFX card idled at 70 celcius with the side of the case off and a 120mm fan blowing on it. The capacitors were hot enough to burn flesh, returned that card. Got another EVGA card and all is fine.
