As for my top ten list for the OP:

1) COD4
2) Orange Box (great buy)
3) Farcry 2
4) Red Alert 3 (good for those that are looking for an easy RTS to get into, quirky)
5) Audiosurf (if you like music based games)
6) Left 4 Dead (I only played the demo, but I liked it a lot and will pick it up soon)
7) The Witcher (Enhanced Edition)
8) GRID/GTR
9) Fallout 3
10) Dead Space

I tried to cover some different categories in that list......... hope that helps... this is not a ranking either.... most are too different to really compare. The only other games are MMO's like WoW, WAR, and the like. Beyond that you have the console port of Gears of War.

Left 4 Dead
Dead Space
Fallout 3
Call Of Duty World at War
Far Cry 2

Ill edit if I can think of more.

The one game that really sucked me in - in recent memory anyway, was STALKER. It's a love-it or hate-it game but can be picked up really cheap. I haven't played the sequel, so can't comment on it.

Oh, and PORTAL! Portal was braincandy. A must-play.

I've heard good things about Assasin's Creed. My copy is still awaiting installation. Too little time.

L4D is a blast - as is TF2.

Fallout 3 (#1 best game ever at the moment)

Orange box (great value)

Counter-strike:source (timeless high quality online multiplayer)

Medieval 2 total war (great mix of elements of "civ" and "c&c": Think "braveheart the game")

Far cry 2 (WAIT for the price reduction!)
