Hey everyone my brother is on his first build, and ran into a little trouble installing his mammoth heat sink. The Northbridge heatsink came off!!

Check it out:

Can this be reinstalled? What would he need to do?

Yeah of course you can reinstall it. Assuming he didn't break the mounting hardware that is. Might want to apply fresh TIM as well.

I'm just wondering...how do you pop that off when installing a CPU heatsink? Which one was he trying to install?

Indeed it can be reinstalled. You just need to clean off the northbridge and the heatsink with some alcohol then reapply a small amount of thermal paste and you're good to go.

Just reinstall it. I still want to know just what he was doing to have that happen though lol.

Looks like push-pins; just change the TIM and put it back on. If for some reason it won't go back on, buy an aftermarket heatsink.

He is using the Sunbeam core contact. And I am not sure how he did this.
I know he tried to install it with the fan facing the ram slots. I told him that I thought the fan always blows toward the back.

Yet another reason not to use the CCF! Harmful to the NB!

Aside from putting the heat sink back on he needs to do a better job on the CPU heat spreader! Man those scratches are huge. Get some finer wet/dry sand paper.

He might not did much sometimes pushpins arent always pushed in all the way and the nb heatsink can come off easy.
