[AMDZone] 40nm Radeons Have Taped Out - Page 6

when I hear things like this. I just think blah.... I mean. the last Nvidia card I owned was a PNY 4600. great card. but once I upgraded to the radeon 9800 i never looked back. the same goes for Intel. I have never used intel. for the solid fact, they were always far to expensive.

now the tables have turned. Intels prices are very comprable to amd. and Nvidia is just way to expensive. I love ATI. I think they have the right outlook on how to sell their products. great power for the price. Nvidia. all you buy is the name.. ya they have power. but I dont see why I should pay almost a grand. for somthing that cant even run crysis full out, waste of money if you ask me.

really just going by current sli 260 numbers, adding a little because the 295 is closer to 2x 280's.

Oh I see. I'll be sure to reference back to this thread if your guess ends up being accurate!

I'd say this would be a bigger problem for ATI:
http://videocardz.com/3514/geforce-3...specification/

I no longer count multi-GPU solutions when looking for a fast GPU, based on my experience with dual 4870X2s. 60fps (or anything higher) with 8xAA on dual X2s feels like 35fps on a single GPU configuration. It was not microstutter, because I would get that as well if I cranked up to 16xAA, the FPS just felt much much lower than reported.
fair enough then, i've never really thought of a 4870x2 being crossfire (although it technically is), it's always been two-three-four linked pcb's.

back on topic: what does it matter if anything released by nvidia in the near future is better than ati's solution ?

nvidia have had to drop their sales prices so low to remain competitive that they are actually losing money on 65nm sales, haven't they ?

Why would anyone want to tri sli 280s? Unless you are rich, a benchmarker...there is no reason to. It's like saying "oh yeah? I have 3 Dodge Vipers...same color, same model....beat that"

Performance and price has to be right in order for a card to be considered a great card. Nvidia did it with the 8800GT, then ATi came with the 48xx line which is phenomenal for the price paid.

I find this hard to believe for the sole fact that nVidia has a CRAPTON more money to burn than AMD currently

Most people here seem to think it's like a race bewteen two runners and AMD is catching up, but it's more complicated than that. AMD's shares are down, the foundry company acquisition didn't go as planned and AMD's share has been lowered (=no good)... financially, AMD is getting its both testicles battered with a sledgehammer. And no matter how good next Phenoms will be, we don't know how much it costs to manufacture those things; maybe AMD did a CPU 4xxx and made a small die that's got a lot of punch, but if the die is fairly big and expensive to manufacture, they ain't going to win - they'll either have to sell the chip at a higher price (=no good even if it matches Intel's offerings price-to-performance wise...they'll have to beat them, otherwise nobody will make the switch) or opt to make very little profit to boost sales and market share, but this won't help if you don't make enough profit off each chip. And AMD struggling financially this bad, they may not be able of funding the research/creation of new kickass products, at least in time to beat Intel... but I still have faith. ATi and Phenom II better keep AMD floating.
A couple of points I disagree with:

- Almost all stocks have been lowered. It's just that type of market

- The 45nm phenom II's will definitely keep them a-float. The average consumer doesn't give 2 s**ts about the iCores being faster in futuremark or giving 3 fps more in crysis. They care about price vs performance. At $300 for the Phenom II's, you can't beat it. Couple that with the 45nm size allowing for cheaper overall production and AMD is in a better position than they've been the last 2 yrs.

- AMD's anti-trust lawsuit is still pending. If they win, the $$$ will probably be in the Billions.

- AMD was in a worse situation last year and managed to kick out the 3xxx series, the 4xxx series and the phenom 50 series without those issues.

People give examples about similar things
You can use 3 GTX280 to have a better gaming experience
but you can't go faster if you have 3 Vipers, you can only use one at the time
