4870 X2, obviously. You want the fastest performance, right? Why opt for a slower card if you can afford the fastest? It doesn't make sense to pick the GTX260, unless you plan on SLI'ing it later on. And even then, a single 4870 X2 beats the GTX260 sli'd. It'd be like someone asking if they should buy an 8600 GT or an 8800 Ultra. Why would anyone recommend the slower card if the buyer can afford the fastest?

Just because you can afford something doesn't mean you should get it. If he has a 22" monitor, he isn't going to gain anything by spending 50% more on a HD4870x2.

I'd go with the 4870x2 if I had the choice. But eh thats me. But seeing as how you have a SLI board I would choose the GTX 260 216sp in this case.

True, but it's also future-proofing any extremely demanding games that will come out.

EDIT: Correction: any potentially demanding games that might come out (in 2009 and beyond).

Dude, you have an Nvidia chipset. To avoid potential head aches, get the Nvidia.

Like...? The most demanding game of the next year will still be Crysis.

Besides that, look at the price difference between the 260-216 and the 280 and compare the benchmark results. Is it really worth the extra $100-$150 at the res he's going to run?

Sure having the absolute best is nice, but it may be a better option to go with the bang-for-the-buck winner.

FWIW, newegg has the eVGA 260 core216 for about $250 right now. I've been pulling what's left of my hair out trying to decide between this or a HIS 4870, but I'm pretty sure I will end up going with the 260. The 4870 is a damn nice card, but the 260 is a little bit faster in most games, and it has the added bonus of Folding insanely well.

SLI and Crossfire just seem like too much of a headache to me, so I have only been watching the single GPU cards. In the price vs performance category, the 4870 and the 260 core216 are neck and neck, with Nvidia having a slight edge. If you wait for the price drops to trickle in (ATI recently dropped 4870/512m cards to the $200 category), the 4870 will be a cheaper buy and end up winning the price vs performance war. Even with a possible $50 price gap, I still think the 260 will be a better investment.
