Let's see, the roadmap for potentially-demanding, upcoming PC games of '09:

Battlefield 3
Call Of Duty 5
BioShock 2
Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box
FEAR 2: Project Origin
Tom Clancy's Endwar
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II
World In Conflict: Soviet Assault
Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Doom 4
Half-Life 2: Episode Three
Demigod
Red Faction: Guerrilla

You'll obviously get faster performance on a 4870 X2 than on a GTX260, even @ 1680x1050. It's all about m0ar fps. The 4870 X2 would be complete overkill for anything below that res. Had he said somethin like whether he should go with a 4850, 4870 1GB, or GTX260 216, then it'd be silly to not pick the GTX 260 216, out of those choices. And hell, for the average price of a GTX260 216 you can now practically pick up a 4850 X2 ($309).

Then why is everyone telling him to get the 260 and sli it later that doesnt make any since either.

My vote is the 4870X2 currently better then the 280 of course. might as well get it for 475 area after rebates then instead of sli'ing later on you could upgrade your monitor witch will show the true power of the 4870X2

the reason y i say get the 280 is because not only is it in his budget range but he has an nvidia board which pretty much cancels ati out of the picture all together unless he just wants 1 card which if u want the best "bang for ur buck" deal then sure go with ati but then again u wont be able to upgrade in the future

one 4870X2 is more then enough even at 1920 1200 you would be crazy to NEED 2 of them i guess it would be nice but no need.

None of which will be more demanding than Crysis. The GTX260 will get you playable framerates in all of them.

It's either way at this point.
I'd go with the GTX260 216 version. (Yay for bandwagons!)
The 4870/x2 is good too, but I don't have much experience with them.
