Why would you stay away from XP x64?

Yeah..

Now if you are playing an older game like CS:S, you will never see an improvement from 2->4GB since Source tops out with a system using 1GB or so (even on my DDR machine it ran best with 1.5GB)

Now games like Crysis, Far Cry 2, Command and Conquer/ any RTS game with high volume of units on screen will demand lots of RAM and it is highly likey that you will see gains, if you dont see gains, you will assuredly see increases in FPS stability when under heavy stress. To me, thats what matters - stability of FPS.

I can play Crysis at 1920x1200 full detail at 25 FPS and its smooth surprisingly. However due to the fact that it holds there pretty good - I dont mind using such a stressful level.. On my last system I could play games like that at 50 fps but it would suddently drop and lag a lot.... I can't have that BS. This was XP 32bit with 2GB of RAM and an HD 2900XT so not a weak system but this happened in most games like counter strike, Crysis on medium, TF2, and HL2 EP2

Alright cool thanks. I guess I will do the upgrade then.

Yeah

I would also like to add that going from 4->8 GB there was no gaming increase. It helped some with memory bandwidth benchmarking but I saw no real improvement with windows other than I can run two virtual machines at the same time while playing games, music, and like 100 tabs of FF and Chrome with no slowdown...... because I do that EVERY DAY! (Well, tbh, I do once in a while since I fold a lot)

I have the same question. I was gifted a copy of XP x64 and I have nothing but good things to say about it. I have never encountered an issue with driver support. All of my hardware that I've tried to use has worked flawlessly. I've never had any programs fail to work. I do a lot of work in CAD and SolidWorks, so the extra memory available is a godsend for me.

So I guess the question is, why do people hate XP x64 so much?

If its free, 64 bit Windows XP is fine. If someone is looking to buy a 64 bit operating system, there is really no reason to go with XP over Vista.

I used to use xp 64 bit, and I would not recommend it. All my hardware and programs have run fine on xp 32 bit and both versions of Vista. However, with XP 64 bit I had a tough time finding drivers that were not buggy. It ended up being much more trouble than it was worth.

I would recommend going with Vista 64 as the other kind people here have mentioned. If you are looking for a significant performance increase , and are indeed going with a large amount of ram, I believe there you could set certain programs and OS features to be loaded to ram at boot.
