Phenom IIs?

Are they expected to be competitive with the Nehalems? Because what I'm seeing everywhere is Intel fanboys saying that AMD is going to be completely out of it and probably dead this year saying the Phenom II won't be any upgrade at all over the Phenom and that the i7s are much faster.

Well, is that true? Because I need to get a new computer soon and I would like to support AMD but I've also got a budget and I want the best for my money, will the Phenom II's be worth it? I saw a site with a benchmark with the Phenom 920 or something right up there with the i7 920 I think it was, maybe a fps lower than it in one and a few higher in another, one game it was a bit lower but still not much more, and they said it could oc to 4ghz on air, and 6ghz on water, but then right after that said it'd suck and be complete crap?

From the limited benches I have seen it is on par with the i7. Not much I can say about it though.

Phenom II will perform a tad bit better than Core2Quad (Yorkfield) clock-for-clock and OC about as good, but i7 still seems to be miles ahead... however, it seems that AMD are trying to pull a 4xxx and beat Intel by having a superior price/performance ratio. Regardless, Phenom II won't be bad no matter how much slander Intel fanboiz throw at them.

As for OCing, Phenom II can do 4GHz on air but I believe they hit 6GHz with Liquid Nitrogen, I think you can reach high-4's with water.

Unfortunately it seems that you'll have to wait till the chips are actually released - then we'll see if they're what they've been hyped up to be.

Well, I'm not planning on an i7, I'm planning on a Core 2, but if the Phenom IIs are better than the C2s and a decent price I might raise my budget and get one instead.

For the sake of lower cpu prices, I hope the Phenom II competes against the i7.

From what I saw, at least for gaming performance, the Phenom II and i7 trade benches, and are all around very close. This was comparing a 940 i7 2.93 Ghz and a Phenom II 940 3.0 Ghz (basically the same clock speed). I have a feeling that the i7 price will come down drastically once phenom II comes out.

At the end of the day I don't think you can go wrong either way, but if you want to pay less, AMD will be the ticket. DDR2 support, cheaper mobos, cheaper CPUs, etc.

oh well if it's a core 2 you're getting, than a phenom for sure. also, the motherboards are cheaper on the green side. get a good 750sb motherboard that is assured to run Phenom II and you're good to go my friend

Well, I mean if it's a better value of course, of course it would be better than the cheap C2 I've been planning on getting but, the cheapest Phenom II is supposed to be about $250 right? If that'd be better than a E8600 or whatever C2Q is that price I'd definitely get one, it's all about what'd be the better value. Guess I'll just have to wait, I wanted to order right after Christmas but I guess I could wait another week or two.
