Hard drive squeaks when shaked

Thread Starter
I'm sitting here with my mom's boss Dell XPS 410. I turn the computer on and it says, "A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart."

I can't press CTRL + ALT + DEL. Why? This computer only accepts USB keyboard and mouses! No PS/2 ports at all.

So, I opened up the rig and looked inside. I noticed that the hard drive is mounted upside down. After I unplugged the SATA and power cable from thr hard drive, I flipped the hard drive to its right side up position. Right then, I heard a squeak within the hard drive. I tried turning it very gently and it still squeak.

Does it sound busted to you?

Hard drive mounting direction doesn't matter... If it does like in your case, something is wrong... very wrong.
Once again...

True except if there is a defect somewhere in the HDD that would for some reason let the HDD read properly only if it's flipped over.

Hard drives should not make any sort of noise when they aren't powered up.

I suspect it's RMA time.

You could go into your BIOS and enable USB device booting so that your KB and Mouse work when you boot up.

I would recommend backing up everything immediately then wipe the disc and RMA it.

Depending on the airflow, I have sometimes mounted HDDs upside-down. I've noticed on SATA drives the electronics get quite hot,so I've tried to place the chips closer to the airflow.

Now a HDD shouldn't squeak, never. You could try powering it up on another rig, but I'd say it's busted. The error "A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart." is typical when you forget to plug the power to the HDD (happened a few times) or when the HDD isn't powering up despite being plugged in.
