Does Envy have an uninstall feature? If not, you can check Synaptic for "fglrx" and uninstall the packages (there should be 2 at least). Once uninstalled, just in case, rebuild X (in a terminal do "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" and accept the default options). For installation, there is a wiki:

http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Main_Page

This is what I would do:

- Uninstall old drivers

- Rebuild X. Open a terminal and type:

Code:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
# it will ask you some stuff but you can simply hit enter on all of them
- Restart X with ctrl+alt+backspace

- When logged in again, move to where you downloaded the driver to (with a terminal):

Code:
cd /<location of driver>
- Start installing:

Code:
sudo sh ati*.run
# just accept the default options for the installer and let it finish
- When the installer finishes, make sure the terminal does not give out errors. Initialize the driver:

Code:
cd
sudo aticonfig --initial
- Restart X again, but to be safe I would reboot the system

- When logged in next, check that the driver is installed:

Code:
#in a terminal
fglrxinfo

#something like this should pop up
principe@magicbox:~$ fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon HD 3850
OpenGL version string: 2.1.8388 Release
IMPORTANT: If you're running any composition managers like Compiz, make sure to turn them off before you do any of this stuff, that way in case the driver fails or something you won't get white screens (or a freezing X) next time you log back in. Once you are sure the driver is installed, you can turn them back on safely.
