i7 and memory

Thread Starter
I'm looking at purchasing a i7 and doing a new build. I'm curious as too why all manufactors out there have either 3 GB or 6 GB with there i7's? Is there a reason there only using these 2 memory setups? I plan on purchasing a 4GB kit 2x2GB when I do this. I just don't understand why 3 or 6?

i7 uses triple channel memory so it needs 3 sticks to transfer data to for that to happen, you could use 2x2 and it would just do dual channel.

you don't NEED tripple channel, i am running dual channel just fine. but if you are buying a new kit, then buy a triple channel kit.
Triple channel kits aren't needed, and in fact, they don't add a lot of performance to dual channel.

for a new build might as well go with the triple channel.

I have had a lot of luck with the Mushkin memory 7,8,7,20 at 1600 at 1.65v

It is hard to find Dual Channel ram that runs at 1.5V. That's why I would go with triple channel.

It doesn't need to run under 1.65V, what you need to watch is that the difference between RAM and IMC voltage is no more than 0.5V.

So can i still buy the 2x2GB kit with a additional 2GB module? This would in effect give me triple channel, correct?

Make sure you get 1600mhz though. The peculiarities of i7 overclocking make it much easier to overclock on ram with more headroom. Also, given that the i7 ram is low voltage, you cannot easily overvolt low mhz ram to achieve higher speeds.

I was actually thinking about going with this.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231190

It's cheap and should serve my purpose if I purchase (2) kits. I plan on doing little or no OC'ing on this machine. If I do it will only be a 200-300 Mhz over stock. Nothing major or extreme.
