GeForce 8400GS, turbocache?

I'm kind of confused, I bought this card almost 6 months ago, I'm more then happy with it, seeing as my last video 'card' was an integrated Radeon 200X-press series, which struggled to get 15FPS in GTA:SA.

The thing that is confusing me, is when I first put it in on my old machine (and my new one, but on XP) it shows up with 512MB memory, which I figured was just one of the features.

I've recently installed Windows Vista Ultimate, now it's showing up with 1011MB of ram? Vista is memory intensive as it is, and if this video card is chewing up over 700mb of my ram, is there a way to disable this?

The games I play are more or less GTA:SA, BF2 and combat arms every so often. So, I'm quite happy with 512mb, or even 256mb of V Ram.
