First time Overclocking Q6700

Thread Starter
I finally decided to destroy my bottleneck CPU, and i was just wondering if anyone had any good advice on OC'ing my CPU. Ive read a bunch of guides and know how to do it, i just want to know safe voltages, multipliers and FSB to use for a 3.2GHZ OC.

at the stock speed it runs no higher than 40 while idle and on full load i had it at 55. My mobo is a XFX 680i LT and i'm using 4 gigs of Corsair dominator ram at 1066 with the Airflow fans ontop of my ram.

If anyone has any advice, it would be great

I would set my FSB to 300. Set the multiply at 10x Test it with prime95 for 12 hours. if stabled i would continue raising my FSB. if it crashes raise up the voltage and test again. Then keep repeating.

note: HIGHEST VOLTAGE 1.5V for the Q6700.

Hope this helps.

But the Rampage formula motherboard is a beast, I hear the 680i with a quad is not so good

Its ok, but the "black holes" make it tricky. I've had a problem with a friend's black hole and OCing.

The problem the OP is facing is that he is running a 680i LT board. Many of the LT boards are based of the 1st revision NVIDIA 680i reference design and cant run that high a FSB with quads.

OP, first lower your CPU multi to 6x and try pushing the SPP (northbridge) voltage to 1.45v and see how high of a FSB you can get. Then once you know the max FSB speeds you can run, start OCing like normal.

Wouldn't a lower multiplier mean he'd need a higher FSB?

Exactly...

In order to find you max stable FSB, you just drop your CPU multi (to take it out of the OCing equation) and start pushing the FSB and northbridge voltage (SPP in the OP's case) to find your board's max FSB. I thing the 680iLT has a max around 350 FSB+/-

Then once the OP has his max stable FSB, he can bring the multi back up to 10x, lower the FSB a little and start OCing the CPU. Since he knows the max FSB, he knows what to focus on during the OCing, ie vcore increase.

Its the most efficient way to dial in an OC.
