Phenom II available ‘fore Yule
The real thing
By Paul Taylor

DISTRIBUTORS IN EUROPE and North America will begin shipping both OEM and retail boxes of the Phenom II 920 and Phenom II 940 starting December 18th (Europe), according to one distributor, and December 20th (North America).

The Phenom II X4 920 SKU will sell at about $235 to retailers, while the overclocking whiz-kid, the Phenom II X4 940 will ship at $275. At least one distributor says December 20th is the ETA for the shipment.

As far as we can tell, pricing in Europe will be around €220 for the 920 but will become available from the 18th. We couldn't get a pricing on the 940, though, but we'd expect it to be in the €250-265 range. Add tax to these numbers, if you will.

This puts the Phenom II X4 940 just under the Core 2 Quad 9550, while the Phenom II X4 920 will undercut the Q9400. Expect Intel to slash prices just before Christmas.

So those of you who wrote letters to Saint Nick asking for Phenom II, might get your wishes after all.

We couldn't get hold of AMD for a comment, but there isn't much to comment, is there? Wonder how that January 8 NDA will hold up when these things reach the market?

Phenom II listed
Down Under pricing upped, then downed
By Paul Taylor
Wednesday, 26 November 2008, 18:02

AUSSIE ETAILER Austin Computers has listed the upcoming Deneb-based Phenom II 920 and 940 processors on its site, which for some reason is currently off-line.

According to the merchant, the unlocked 3GHz / 2MB+6MB cache Phenom II 940 will cost AUS$ 532 (approx. USD$ 347) while the 2.8GHz multiplier-locked Phenom II 920 will be a tad lower at AUS$471.90 (approx. USD$ 307). We’d subtract a few dollars for exchange purposes…

The (current) cheapest Core i7 on the market, the 920, costs $299.99 at NewEgg.com, which in our book is the same as AMD’s pricing.

The Intel Core i7 940 goes for $569.99 (also at NewEgg.com), while the AMD copycat will cost about $339.99 (guesstimation at work). Pundits and hacks alike have no real idea how the Deneb core will measure up to Nehalem in the end, but the pricing looks ambitious if you consider its predecessor’s pedigree…

Maybe the fuss that's being made about the overclocking ability has a part in this: most fanbois will skip the 920 and go straight to the overclocker-titillating 940… you won’t really be paying much for the privilege, now will you?

We’d point you towards the necessary URL, but it seems that the whole site has been down for a bit. However, some clever chap capped the whole affair and posted it on Imageshack, which you can find here. However, adding a bit of substance to the affair, Static Ice, a price engine Down Under did retrieve the listing for the upcoming January 8th processors. You can find the listing here.

Unfortunately, at the moment we were writing this, we didn’t have Austin’s contact nor could we access the site to query them about the listing. µ
http://www.austin.net.au/ProductList...0/Default.aspx (not for sale...yet) I would still get it from new egg only because it takes a day to get here with ground shipping.

thats USD$350.48 For a PhenomII 940BE

Lets hope its true!

Cool, this is just what I wanted to hear. So, would the 920 overclock that much worse than the 940? Even still, if it's $275 for the 940 I might try to scrounge some money together for it.

Thank god AMD didn't change sockets cuz then the II's would not be a good deal at all. Here's to AMD making a competitive run at intel on their terms and to catching the i7s like they said with their AM3's next year. Competition for the win.

Looks like I might be picking up a Phenom II before X-Mas, if this holds true. Why would the 920 cost more than $300 though? I can't wait until these actually come out, so we actually know what they will cost.

I think I'll hold out till the 910 or 925 come out on AM3, since those are 95watt chips compared to the 125watt chips of the 920 and 940
