Were any of the PSU leads burnt? Is there any of the plastic sheathing on the PSU melted?

PSU leads are totally fine and no plastic melted.

Thats weird that thats where it would short I can't imagine anyway the board or anything could have been touching there but things happen.

Could anyone recommend a good budget board for a duo core 2

Thanks

Doesn't a short mean that a circuit is being accidentally opened by a piece of metal (or a different conductive material)? Unless the board (or a component on the board) was physically touching the case's MB tray, I don't see how that could have caused the short. I may not understand the electrical specifics though...

BTW, Kriss no hard feelings and nice case! Havent seen too many OCN'ers with the 3D Mercury. I hope you tore out the built-in crap WC quick and modded in a real loop like I did!

Usually PSU's put on a better fireworks show than that.

Seriously, damn.

Sorry, was a bit vague in my post..Did not imply the mobo touched the metal case here, but the origin of the short-a short is the unhindered flow of electrons between two points of least resistance , hence maximum current draw-can now be traced back from this plug..

Follow the 2 burn marks on the board corresponding to the case marks and you should find components equally damaged. That should indicate the cause or secondary component failure as in the fan scenario I posted earlier.

As to my case, Im afraid Ive not changed much except for an additional radiator and a Fusion DTek block.

Can you post a pic of the 24 pin plug from the front of the board and from the rear or backside please ? An area of about 3 square inches around the plug if you could.
This is very intriguing....
