Problem after formatting a partition

Thread Starter
My hard drive is made up of two partitions: One with windows xp pro and the other with windows vista ultimate. After a while I decided to format the partition with windows xp. When I formated the partition and the computer restarted I recieved a "NTLDR is missing" message. What is the problem?

Seems to me that that stands for NT Loader.

You probably had your XP set to priority. To fix this you have to pop in your vista DVD. I don't remember the exact steps, but pop it in and tell us what you see and we can help guide you through it

I'm pretty sure vista is the priority because everytime I turn on the computer vista is the OS that loads up. I'll try to find my vista cd (it could be anywhere, haha).

I have had this happen. It means you are missing some windows boot files. It can be fixed without reinstalling windows. Pop in your XP disc, select repair, and go for the "fix boot" option.

I formatted the partition that has windows xp. I don't need it anymore, why would I repair it? I just want the partition to stay as unallocated space (for now).

I think you can do the same thing with your Vista DVD - just have it repair the installation, it will drop the required boot files onto the primary partition. You can't have it stay "unallocated" because you have it currently set as the active boot partition.

Another option might be to change the partition allocations but I'm not sure if you can do that while there is data on it. That would be the easiest fix if it is indeed possible. 3rd-party tools like Partition Magic can do that for you, for sure.

The problem is that the MBR is still telling the PC that the XP partition is the active partition (boot partition).

Download GPARTED and put it on a CD, and boot to it. Set the Vista partition to "active" and it will work.

It would be helpful if you would describe what you see when you boot your computer.

You've talked about booting Vista as the default OS and about booting XP.

If the computer boots Vista, but the boot loader gives you the option of booting XP (but the XP errors to "NTLDR not found"), you can use Vista's BCDedit to edit the XP option out of the Vista boot loader.
