Just got myself an AMD Phenom 9550

So what's the highest speed you think I can get with an ChillTec Thermo Electric CPU Cooler? I just want to have an idea of what people have clocked it to.

You should be able to hit 2.8ghz fairly easy, 3.0ghz if you are good, and up to 3.3ghz if you are really lucky. The phenoms don't overclock very well... even the "black editions". They also don't perform that much better at higher clock speeds either.

Hmm, I wouldn't expect much. That's a socket AM2 board, and obviously no SB750. I wouldn't expect anything higher than 2.8Ghz, given your mobo. From the start your board is slightly handicapping it, because it's not socket AM2+.

One question, though. Does it run circles around my AMD 5000 Black Edition?

I would imagine so. Especially in DVD encoding and multitasking. Gaming... hard to say.

Edit: If you want it to truly run circles around your previous cpu, and be able to attain a high(er) o/c, then you should look into acquiring an ASUS M3A79-T Deluxe board. Pretty much the best overclocking board for Phenoms, at the moment.

An AMD Phenom is much faster then a AMD dual core in pretty much everything, including games. The difference between it and other (intel) CPUs at stock is usually no more then 4 or 5 framerates were it matters- on GPU bottleneck settings.

should have waited for Deneb upgrade your motherboard and wait for deneb but i guess its to late for that

Hmm, not necessarily. If he was running his 5000+ BE at say 3.2-3.3GHz, he might have well seen more fps on it than on his 2.6GHz Phenom. Especially in games that don't even utilize more than one cpu thread.
