Flash drive on/off switch

Thread Starter
I just had this thought.. My case came with 2 DOA usb ports that I never got around to sending in for RMA. So, what if I wire the on/off switch to the usb port, so when I insert a flash drive it would close the circuit? I would probably have to modify a flash drive for this, but would it work in theory?

This would really help when friends come over and decide to start pressing random buttons on my computer. Which means I'd wire the BIOS reset button into one of the ports also.

So should I try it? I'd have to insert the drive and remove it quickly. It would work like a key. Here's a diagram:

there is no reason for it not to work, and you dont have to worry about removing it quickly, I learned that reset and power switches stay closed as long as your finger is on them.

so yeh it could be any usb port, and any two wires, as long as they are two wires that actually touch the contacts of a thumbdrive, then you can just short all the connectors on the thumb drive.

Ill try to make a pic for how it would definately work.
Depends on the switch. Some activate in the middle of the push. Momentary switches. I'm pretty sure computer I/O switches are momentary.

PC case switches are momentary switches. You could probably mod the body of a flash drive to have an internal micro switch so that you insert it then push a button on the flash drive.

It should work. "Momentary" switches just means that it does not latch. It makes contact as long as you hold it down (hence the ability to turn off your computer by holding the power button for 5 seconds).

Rather than kill a flash drive (unless you have a dead one), just buy a cheap USB cable and cut off the required end. Wire it up and shrink wrap it.

Even if your USB ports maybe dead... pin 1 and 4 are for power and still may work. Connecting them will cause a short which may damage your mobo and will shutdown a motherboard.

You want to prevent someone from turning on the PC? Just put a PW on the BIOS.
Once again...

I was thinking doing that also, I have some spare USB cables laying around.

Nope, I've tested them and they have no current. Plus I'm going to disconnect them from the motherboard USB connector. I can always use a different pin combo too, doesn't really matter.

And what's the fun in just setting a BIOS password?

thats a better idea, so someone doesnt just put a flash drive in it and accidently shut it off

Actually, that USB drive key is a great idea and can and will work. Just use pins 1 and 4 like you have in the first post and wire it to the power pins on your mobo. You have up to 5 seconds to take it out once you insert it so that shouldn't be a problem.
