Need help choosing RAID card!

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

I have just bought 3 of them new WD Caviar Black AALS 640GB drives which I intend to run in RAID 0 for MAX speed.

I will initially be doing so with the onboard controller. But I know this is 'fake' RAID if you put it.

So guys, I want a decent RAID card which can handle 3 drives (other 2 will be using onboard with no RAID).

I have a PCI Express Slot x16 free. (It will have to squeeze in between my Prelude and 280.

I don't want to go mega expensive but I want something good and it must come from a UK shop.

OS is Vista 64.

Cheers.

What about this one?

I wouldn't call onboard RAID "fake" RAID.

Software RAID is fake.

EDIT AGAIN: Nevermind, I need to read the review better. This only supports two drives

Well here is a toms article:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...ves,852-5.html

I haven't been able to track down the benchmark, but for the most part hardware RAID and software RAID (in particular on the ICH10R chipsets) perform about the same. Example:

http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/161...ler/index.html

When you start to add many drives to a RAID array, the favor tends to go in the way of hardware, particularily PCIE interface RAID cards.

This card could do what you want to do:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16816131003

It is in the configuration shown here, with multiple fast HDD that hardware RAID really shines:

http://hothardware.com/articles/Asus...board/?page=10

ICH10 chipests tend to cap of at about 300mb/s read speed. Four crappy HD in RAID 0 and four high power 10000 rpm HD in RAID 0 can somtimes cap of there. Wether or not it is worth the money to you... hard to say.

i would go with the Perc cards they do really well theres a guide/review on here somewhere and you can mod the heatsink and add more ram to it to make it faster as well, and there like 100 bucks on ebay right now look for Perc raid card

PERC RAID cards, I'll look now.

Can't find much which convinces me to click buy.

I really would rather buy new.

If you want a new hardware RAID card, expect to pay around $250-1000. If you want a new PERC 5/i card, expect to pay around $400 while a used one is $100. If you want hardware RAID cheap.... you can't.

Anything less is either software or host-based RAID.
Once again...
