Molex to PCIe Adapter

Thread Starter
As my PSU has only one PCIe connector I have this adapter below to convert one molex to a PCIe connection to power my HD 4870.

As you can see it has two identical Molex In connections. Do I have to use both of these as in connect two Molex connectors into both ports or is merely one enough. For the past 4 months I have used just one but now I am a little curious...

if the adapter has 2, you plug in 2, if the adapter has 1 you plug in 1, as far as I'm aware there's no difference between the 2 (I used a single molex adapter on my 2900 XT just fine.)
Oh as swiftes said, plugging 1 into that adapter you've posted is a very bad idea

I'm sure I was doing this at some point in the near past... I'm just not sure when. Thanks for the heads up. I was sure that it was to spit the molex plug so you could plug in something else... No damaged hardware on my end though Thanks for the heads up!

Staring at it, how would you know... To me it looks like a splitter of sorts. They shoud label it or package a piece of paper in it that shows how to hook it up.

I'm psychic, just not that psychic.

The one time I wanted to read the directions, they weren't there.

I have to agree with dmreeves, as I had to wait around for this adapter to come through the mail with me sitting at home with a 4870 in my hands unable to be used I instantly thought it was a splitter also and I only noticed now that they are both for power input.

My graphics performance has been on par with what reviews suggest for this card so I am a little confused...anyway will be plugging it in now.

THe main reason for usingtwo molex is to distribute the amps appropriately over the wiring...too much draw on one particular wire= fire.

I've seen plenty of single molex adapters though so I doubt is that big a deal. I've made single molex adapters too that work fine ()no heat on the wire) but that's the reason for it.

A 6-pin PCI-E connector has three +12v wires. Each four pin molex connector only has one +12v wire. Putting more than 5-6 amps or so through a single 18 gauge wire is not really a good idea. In extreme cases, as CD has stated, you can start a fire.

You were probably getting a somewhat significant voltage drop on that second 6-pin connector, evidently not enough to harm anything or cause obvious instability, but using the second molex connector, on a separate strand from the PSU, is much preferable.

Also, bad power almost never shows up as performance problems, it shows up as instability, or eventual damage to components.

Yea, only having 1 plugged does not always cause a problem, but can. As stated above, only having 1 plugged in increases the draw on that 1, and could cause a heat issue, from melted wires to a fire to a PSU burning out. It can also show up as instability, especially when overclocking or stressing the GPU.
And as Blameless pointed out, try to use 2 seperate molex strands to distribute the load over 2 sets of wires instead of 1.
