Prob w/xp load in xp/vista dual boot - mup.sys hang

Well, I have searched google for two days gathering info on what may be going on with my XP SP3 install. Setup is as follows:

Two WD250's in RAID 0 - 3 partitions (D:XPsp3, C:Vista32sp1, W: Documents -shared between both OS's.
One 1TB WD - 4 partitions (K:File Backup, G:Miscellaneous Storage, I:Vista Page File, J:XP Page File

Been up and running good for two weeks. All updates installed. OC'ing with no problems.

Here is where problem began. Two days ago I decided I would load the IE8 Beta in XP. When asked to reboot it wouldn't complete intall so I had to power down manually. Restarted and loaded XP with "Last Known Good Configuration". Uninstalled IE8, rebooted, loaded Normally, downloaded and installed Windows Security updates, rebooted, install wouldn't finish/windows hung, Powered down manually.

From here on I went through a series of System Restores, VGA Driver uninstall, Driver clean, reboot, wouldn't load normally. I have since only been successfull loading XP either in Safe Mode or Last Known Good Configuration. It will not load normally.

Vista is fine! After post each time the GRUB shows and I can choose Vista with no issues. XP on the other hand only responds with Safe Mode or Last Known...

My thoughts are MBR or XP Boot.ini are goofed. With Safe Mode start, XP has hung a couple of tries at the mup.sys load. At this point it stalled and I powered downed manually and rebooted with Last Known.... without a hitch.

Booting from the XP disc and Repairing the OS is not an option I want to take as it will affect the Vista MBR and then Vista wouldn't load.

What do you all think? I would ditch XP altogether but I have a video editing app I still use that works best in XP.

I am assuming a Registry Repair such as this http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q307545 would alter the boot.ini and affect the Vista MBR as well, or would the System Restore return it back to it's previous state? Is the repair even necessary since I can load with Safe Mode or Last Known...?

Lastly, I installed EVGA Precision and ATI Tool prior to all these problems to OC my VGA. It isn't currently OC'ed but, Device Manager in XP showed and ATI driver reference.

Could that be part of the mup.sys issue? I don't see the PSU being an issue as my OC in Vista is fine. Prime 95 for an hour of large FFT's showed all passes. I even underclocked to 2.7ghz cpu and still same issue in XP.

Are you using the Vista or the XP bootloader? You mention GRUB which is a linux loader. Vista and XP are very different from each other when comparing their boot process.

You could try repairing the boot loader off your vista DVD. It will boot XP just fine.

Are you getting any of the errors mentioned in that Microsoft article you linked (Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM32\\CONFIG\\SYSTEM)? Recovering a registry is a pita and should only be considered a last ditch. Also recovering the registry won't fix (or break) your boot.ini and vista MBR, so I don't see that as being the problem.

To be honest, I would run a good chkdisk on your Raid array. If you want to spend a few dollars on a really really good hard drive software tool then grab a copy of SpinRite. http://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm

And lastly, here is a link to a mup.sys boot failure article. I read most of it and can't decided if the author knows what he is talking about or just blowing smoke, so take what he says with a grain of salt.

Hope some of this helps!

To the best of my knowledge it is the Vista Bootloader. XP was loaded first on 1st partition, and Vista was loader later on 2nd partition. Yeah, that is my ignorance on using the term grub. I have been playing with the idea of loading Ubuntu and had a brain fart.

Thanks for the info! I checked out some of the mup.sys articles on another page as well and I didn't get to far with it.

Here is the ironic thing! After uninstalling the ATI Tool and using Driver Cleaner Pro to remove any ATI drivers, it has been loading normally.

I have been able to install updates and rebooted 3-4 times and each time it has loaded normally. Only time will tell if this is going to continue to be stable. I did compile an mpeg2 clip in XP and noticed it was glitchy in playback with WMP. I'm wondering if my VGA driver needs reloaded.

Thanks for the ideas! I'll come back to this post if any similar issues arise again.
