[Planned Build][i7] MONOLITH

Thread Starter
Hey y'all.
I'm planning on spending no more than $10,000 on a computer build in April '09. Yep. $10,000 xD.

So far I got:
Main Rig:
cpu: Intel Core i7 Extreme Edition 965
motherboard: Foxconn Bloodrage X58
memory: CORSAIR DOMINATOR 6GB (or some of that OCZ PC3-20000 stuff)
graphics: 2x ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 (which ones? Asus?)
blu ray: LiteOn DH-4B1S Blu-Ray Writer
harddrives: 32GB 2.5" SSD, Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB
power supply: Ultra X3 PSU 1000W
case: Antec Nine Hundred
monitor: 30", idk which one yet (another model might come out before April?)

NAS (Not included in the $10k):
Probably 6x 1.5 TB in RAID 5... if anyone knows a good NAS enclosure that can handle that and WoL, sweet, please tell me! Otherwise I'm thinking a microATX w/ Atom.

I also want to make it look nice. I know a little about computer parts, but I'm not so clued in on hardware eye-candy or water-cooling... so any advice is greatly appreciated. I'm not hard set on the Antec case so if there is a more easily WC'd case or w/e feel free to chime in.

Since I'm spending a lot of money on this I wanna be 110% sure I'm getting pure drool-worthy performance @ 2560x1600... thats why I ask you good people to criticise and help me.

Thank you for your replies.

PS: Thought I'd explain the SSD + Velociraptor situation: I plan to install Windows to the SSD and then have Program Files & Users folders be mounted on seperate partitions on the Velociraptor. If its overkill please say, in fact I know its overkill, but I want FAST.

PPS: (10,000.00 NZD = 5,443.07 USD)

I would get a bigger case such as the TJ07. Why not 12GB of ram? A different psu such as the corsair 1000W and do you need 9TB of storage?

wow that's an awesome killer system. Best I have seen so far on OCN !!! With all the stuff your going to put in, i would suggest the 1200. Also, you would have better cable management, and since look is important for you, it would help you alot. Just by curiosity, how much did you pay

has any one noticed that allot of threads have been showing up lately (since core i7 was released) of new people at OCN saying they are going to build these killer dream 5 grand + rigs with allot of expensive parts

i bet half of them are just trying to impress and not actually building the rig
shame really

Yes. Yes, I do need 9TB I have 2.3TB now and its getting quite tight... I got a TB about 2months ago and its filled.
I like the modular flexible wires of that PSU. Seen the TJ07, don't like it too much :/ The Twelve Hundred is probably my next choice.

Thanks, I hope it'll get better once the OC goes down! Just remember I havne't bought it, I'm kinda getting a few months ahead of myself. Sorry if that against the rules...

I'm sure Vista x64 can use it (Though I'm sure you're talking about x86), but yeah, 12GB is kinda overkill right now, maybe at the end of 2010 I'll need an upgrade...

Thanks all for the quick interest! I hope to form a nice case mod theme in my mind but my name for it (Monolith) isn't conjuring anything but rocks, lol.

No point on planning a build 4 months before buying it. By the time you "plan to" buy it they might release Core i7 978XFX ProPoop Edition.
