Want to buy second laptop for mother... which one should I get?

I found the laptop for my brother and thanks to everyone who helped me with that. I am throwing some money in with my sister to pay for a laptop for good ol` mom...

She owns a business so she needs something that can do basic applications well such as Quickbooks, Word Processing, Internet browsing, IM, and things of that nature.

She watches alot of movies of her PC and listens to music as well.

I have about $550 to $600 to spend on her and would like to get the most for my money and want a SOLID PRODUCT that will last her a while.

So post your suggestions or give advice for what brand I should buy.

I like this Lenovo for $599/$549 after rebate. Link. NewEgg lets you sort by price. They have many in your price range. This one has an Intel PDC it is Penryn on a Montevina platform so Intel's newest. Should have no problems with the applications you mention.

Upgrading to at least 3GB RAM would be a good idea w/Vista. 2GB SO-DIMM $15.99, link. Do not worry about different speed it will work at 677Mhz.

I have seen many in my price range but I have no idea what is considered "good" in terms of brand/specs.

Well where to start? And that might not even be possible as I could be wrong. I certainly do not know all models as just too many.

I start with components. Those are comparable as they all use a limited number. I do not pay much mind to optical other than is it a DVD/burner. HDD I look at size more is better almost all in your price are 5400rpm. I tend to avoid 4200rpm. Now to the important features CPU/GPU/RAM. CPU well Intel or AMD. The best Intel's in price are PDC. The one I linked is the most recent. It is a C2D with less L2 and lower FSB. Just for info many have bought C2D and plugged in socket and FSB increases as the same platform. No guarantee MoBo or Bios issues could prevent. Intel's are more efficient clock for clock than AMD's. AMD's run hotter, much. AMD's are fine but they are what I said. I have one and no problems.

Let's talk GPU? All your choices are IGP. the X4500 is the upgrade over the X3100 Intel IGP. AMD does have an advantage over the Intel's w/IGP's so do Nvidia IGP's for gaming. But since all are weak I do not consider much. I liked my link because it was Intel and their newest. Combined with the CPU benefit that is why I liked.

RAM? Well so easily upgraded and cheap I look at speed and amount. I want at least 667Mhz PC2-5300. On this front AMD will win in bandwidth over Intel. AMD uses "Hyper Transport" has onboard memory controller and no FSB. My AMD w/PC4200 had a bandwidth of about PC5300 Santa Rosa above Napa.

Now we move onto case construction. No notebook in this price is going to be built like a ThinPad not even the Lenovo. If you can go and see that is good but you can't always do. So, well, made of the same materials so I roll the dice. And in some cases comes off the line at the same factory as all OEM's do not make their computers. They use ODM's to manufacture. There are a limited number and all are in Taiwan and China.

I do look and pay attention if I hear of issues. I consider. Read reviews and focus on the build portion as components are what they are.

Good luck.

I agree focus on CPU and Ram as any IGP will do. I still like my recommendation but you could find cheaper. I just want the newstuff Montevina. This is Mom so in all honesty I guess a PIII could do also?

DeLL outlet or Ebay used?

So go for it!
