I have a PS3 and 47" 1080p LCD, and unless I sit 2 feet away from it the difference between DVD and BD is barely noticeable. Normal people buy large TV's for their large living rooms and they sit 20 feet away. This is why normal people will not see much of a difference, let alone enough to drop thousands of dollars on converting their movie collection from DVD to BD.
I suppose I'm one of those who notice the difference between the two. But then again, I try to focus on everything (lines, color, etc.), and I sit about 5 feet away from my 32" LCD.

That study is for Standard Def Analog TV (640x480) with it's warm & fuzzy look versus true HD Channels (720p & 1080i). The difference between them is quite large and noticeable, for many reasons such as camera quality, lighting improvements between now and the 1990's, resolution increases, frame rate increase, and no EMI Analog interferance going on!
Then what study was the writer referring to? I assumed you were referring to the one I posted.

And if HD-DVD would have one we probably wouldn't even be talking about the PS3 right now, since blu-ray is pretty much all it has on the 360 right now.

Its not that people can't tell the difference, its that they haven't actually seen HD to know what it is.

Maybe you need glasses? I have pretty bad vision, but I can still tell the difference between CBC and CBC HD in 1080i when I'm watching hockey, even without my glasses.

total ~460 dollars+live 60 dollars every year.

like it or not, 360 is tons more expensive then the ps3.
you don't have to agree but that's me 2cents.

Why do you need an HDD to play games? The only thing I use mine for is game installs. Why do you need another controller? The arcade unit already comes with one?

Also, I can buy a 360 and a standalone blu-ray player for less than the PS3, and with prices on blu-ray players coming down it won't be long before you can get a quality blu-ray player and a 360 for less than the PS3.

Sony is in deep trouble, because they can't drop the price anymore. There likely won't be another PS3 price cut until spring at the earliest. Microsoft can't drop the 360's price much more either, but its already $200 less than the PS3. Sony didn't even do it right. When you have the most expensive hardware you are supposed to have superior looking games, but the two consoles look almost identical, with a slight edge to the 360. At least when the xbox cost more than the ps2 the games looked better.

I give credit where credit is clearly due to the Wii, but compared to the 360 I wouldn't say the PS3 is flopping:

378,000 PS3s * $400/PS3 = $151,200,000 in PS3 sales

836,000 360s * $200/360 = $167,200,000 in 360 sales

So clearly the 360 is winning this month, especially when you factor in the higher-priced 360s that are being sold, but should 9 or 10 million dollars really be the difference between a "flop" and "respectable"?

If that's your outlook on it I'm not even willing to continue the discussion. You just disregarded every single PS3 exclusive game out there for no good reason. I'm pretty sure MGS is a big advantage for the PS3 over the 360. The PS3 has more going for it if you actually stop and look instead of being a sheep.

I'm not going argue which one is better, because each to their own and personally I own and play both consoles. But I really get annoyed when people spin the same old BS about the PS3.

But it lost. It lost hard and everyone with some logic predicted it would. Sony couldn't afford for Blu-Ray to lose.

If you knew anything about the storage medium market, you'd know that prices on both ends for brand-new technology go down extremely fast. The Blu-Ray player cost Sony over $200 per console when the PS3 first came out. Now we're spending under $100 for an internal 5.25" player. Of course they can drop the price...it's either they make more money or they drop the price.

Identical with a slight edge to the 360...right. When a company works on an exclusive PS3 title, it shows. MGS4 is a good example. FFXIII and God of War 3 will be better. Have you seen the latest FFXIII trailers?

PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) has continued its strong momentum during the holiday season with 378,071 hardware units sold in November, representing an increase of almost 100% from October. From January to November 2008, more than 2.8 million PS3s have been sold in the U.S., representing a year-to-date hardware sales growth of more than 60%.

You can spin the numbers all day long but the PS3 isn't doing bad at all. It's all relative.

It totally varies by person though. I'm not an HD freak, but I can definitely notice the differences, even on small screens. But we all know that the author doesn't know what they're talking about because screen size has nothing to do with resolutions. Hell, back in the day they made huge-as$ 60" projection TV's that were only 640x480.

Anyhoo, (a) I'm not surprised sales aren't going well, as previous posters mentioned the economy sucking. (b) I don't think the poor sales of the PS3 have anything to do with it offering high-def outputs--if that were true, blu-ray sales wouldn't be going up, as they have been since it's release. Also, the console outputs HD regardless of the optical drive it's using since it's games are encoded in HD resolutions--so even if you're not watching a movie, it's still HD, and going to look better on a higher res larger screen vs. a lower res larger screen.

I also think it has to do with the slow start the PS3 got--the 360 seems to be much more popular, and has a fairly massive game library. I can see that being a big deal.

That doesnt make any sence. Sony is loosing money on every PS3. MS is making money or breaking even on every 360.

And there not making money off selling consoles, everyone knows that. They make it off the games they sell. Look at how many more consoles MS is selling. That means that they will sell more games.

Also im pretty sure the higher priced 360's are already factored in to those numbers.
