[CNNMoney] PS3 Flopping this X-mas. - Page 5

At the end of the day who cares what sells more...you buy what you buy with the money you have.

I bought a PS3 because I prefer Sony products, never had a problem with them and I sold my X360 because I wanted 1080P movies.

And for the people who say you can't tell the difference between DVD & Blu-Ray...are you freaking serious?? Get a good quality Blu-Ray like Tears of the Sun and compare it to its DVD brethen and then tell me theres no difference...no matter how far you sit from the screen!

The PS3's big bonus is its ability to double as a Blu-Ray player. Too bad no one seems to care about hi-def DVDs. The differences between Blu-Ray and DVD are hard to see on a TV less than 50".
Oh I BEG to differ.

Quote:
The PS3 just doesn't have any must-have titles exclusive to the console. "LittleBigPlanet" has generated decent buzz but isn't a game-changer, and neither is Sony's new virtual world "Home."
Resistance 2. 60 Player TDM. Peroid.

Quote:
It's the most expensive console on the market, $150 - $200 more than its rivals. Even if you believe the video game industry is "recession-proof" (it isn't), a tanking economy makes consumers more price-conscious.
That basically is prolly the #1 reason for any sale drops considering we're not only in an economic depression, but this is the reason the PS3 really hasn't become as popular as it could be. So this one I agree with.

The difference between SD TV and HD TV is quite large, as I already pointed out before you posted. The difference between DVD and BD is not as large, which is why it is harder to tell the difference at a distance. Sure, I can tell the difference, but it's not a large difference, it's not VHS to DVD difference. It's a tiny difference that does not better the movie experience, and it most certainly does not warrent the thousands of dollars it costs.

Anyone who claims otherwise is simply lying to justify their expensive purchase. I own a PS3, many BD's, and a nice high quality TV to watch them on. If I was strapped for cash, I would be extremely disappointed in Bluray, as right now it collects dust while my Video On Demand, PPV, HD Cable Movies, and DVD player get all the action.

VHS to DVD was a huge leap. We jumped from analog to digital, which alone made up for the largest and most noticeable jump in quality. Long gone with the fuzzy (warm) pictures with low detail, bad cameras, and horrid lighting. Now we had digital cameras with digital signal processing/correction, better lighting & automatic lighting correction, higher resolution, better audio, ect. Even old people could notice the difference between SD/VHS and DVD.

With DVD to BD, all we have done is increased the resolution and bitrate by a bit, but everything else remains the same. It's definitely a lackluster improvement compared to the VHS -> DVD transition.

But yea, with it being the highest price point. It is obvious that people will choose the cheaper product regardless of performance/abilities.
Seems like you're contradicting yourself in one post here...you're calling people sheep for paying attention to how expensive it is, but then saying it's obvious that people would do so. Unless you're arguing that most people are sheep, which I probably would not disagree with.

Not that it matters one bit, but this is probably very true. Last gen, the Playstation brand owned the market. They kind of squandered that dominance, assuming that the name Playstation name would bring people to the expensive PS3 regardles of price. Either that or it was a strategic decision to sacrifice the dominant position in an attempt to get as many Blu-Ray players in living rooms as possible.

That's what I argued back at the PS3 launch, I still think it's true.

As an aside, the folks who think I'm an X360 fanboy are going to have to stuff it...I just ordered myself a PS3 today as my Xmas present from the wife. Not really as a game console though, as a Blu-Ray player. I'm taking advantage of that $150 off, so it's only costing me $250 net (plus a remote control and The Dark Knight...of course I'm getting The Dark Knight!!!). I would never pay $400 for a Blu-Ray player, but $250? Heck yeah, especially for the best one out there. (And I'll probably sneak some gaming in there, just not very much...won't be allowed, wrong room of the house!)

I bought one (80GB) yesterday

Mirrors Edge (underrated)
Metal Gear Solid 4 (Bought it ages ago, thought it would get harder to find in pristine condition, which it is)
Resistance
Resistance 2
Little Big Planet
Uncharted
Lost (Came in bundle )
Prince Of Persia (Won in a competition)

and gonna pick up Wipeout HD and Burnout Paradise off PSN next week. I was more excited about this purchase than my Wii and 360 combined

I have a ps3 love it to death gets play almost every day but what it comes down to is personal preference. I cant justify paying extra money to play a game i already paid for just so i can play online, another reason why im not a fan of MMO's (played WoW took way too much time from my life). I feel though that it seems to be a kind of WIP or testing ground for sony. I mean they dont really care too much on the money front as they won the format war so there going to be making alot of money that way.

Sure the PS3 is more expensive but when you factor in online and if people purchase Wi-Fi the cost seems to come closer anyway. Not to mention the ps3's home theatre abilities, its more of an all in one than a gaming console and still manages to excel at both of these.

In terms of sales sure it may be "flopping" but as i stated earlier sony dont really care to much as they have Blu-ray to help make up sales on top of its published games.

I have a PS3 and 47" 1080p LCD, and unless I sit 2 feet away from it the difference between DVD and BD is barely noticeable. Normal people buy large TV's for their large living rooms and they sit 20 feet away. This is why normal people will not see much of a difference, let alone enough to drop thousands of dollars on converting their movie collection from DVD to BD.
I'm the minority that can see a huge difference from 8 feet away from my 47" 1080p. Blu-ray lets you see pores on the skin and individual hairs on close ups while my DVD now looks like its gone through a gaussion blur filter compared to blu-ray.

PS3's have been $399 and $499 almost as long as they have been out. (other than the 60gb debut )

The only time they drop a price is when a store wants to clear inventory for the new machines.

They'll plop in a larger HDD. change the Price point, but then drop the model that would drop below the $399 point.

Blue Ray players are cheaper now; I don't think this is a major selling point for anyone but an avid gamer. It's time to see lower prices Sony.

They could easily make a killing selling 20GB PS3's; who really uses all that space???

Personaly I think its the best blu ray mainly because of the bluetooth remote control. Its great to not have to point it directly at the player or move something that might be in the way.

I wouldn't call the PS3 a 'sinking ship' as the article goes ahead to say.

The fact of the matter is that the Wii is probably one of the biggest festive money makers in the media industry. That takes first place. The 360 has been cut down to some ridiculously low prices. What with the arcade version at £150. The PS3's sales have risen considerably since the rise of blu-ray earlier this year. And its own exclusive titles have boosted sales. But Microsoft have lowered their prices far earlier than in previous generations. I remember the PS1 didnt achieve £150 until about a year later a decade ago. The PS3 still has the best value for money. But at the end of the day people will buy the cheapest box at christmas with the current economic crysis. Theres alot more presents bought for kids than media enthusiasts at this time of year.

Its funny how some sources take quarterly sales reports as the final verdict for the console war. Have they forgotten the PS3 was ahead in sales in summer? And even ahead of the Wii in Japan? No mention of that..

EDIT: I'd also agree with previous comments on advertising. On almost all multi-format game adverts on TV or in Cinema the end credit is the 360 logo and 'out now for xbox 360'. Microsoft are obviously splashing out a lot more cash to make it seem that the games are only out for their system. Yet sony advertise very little. Atleast here in the UK. Littlebigplanet has had a huge advertising campaign here this winter. But that's about it for sony. They arent doing much to push their titles. Its a shame.
