Adding a second Velociraptor for a RAID 0?

Thread Starter
Hey, I just bought a second 300GB Velociraptor and was wanting to know if it is possible to convert my current config to a RAID 0 without having to reinstall Vista. I'm using an Asus P6T motherboard with Vista 64.

And if its possible is it better to let it keep my install of Vista and "migrate" it over to the RAID 0... or to somehow prompt it to reformat the drive and start with a clean RAID 0 and reinstall Vista.

Thanks.

You may be able to make an image of your current drive on another one, wipe your raptor and make the array, then copy the image back.

I would think it be possible the way i described it but you would have to have atleast 2 spare hard drives, one with an OS installed on it.

And you wouldnt have to reinstall, ive done it...

OK, so I will just reinstall Vista. No Biggie I guess.

Is setting up a tough? Do I just go into bios and follow my motherboard's directions and I'm done - or will I have to do stuff in Vista too?

I did a quick google search and it said Vista had them build in. So I should be good.

About the safely of RAID 0 though. I intend to work off this machine as well as play. Is the risk of the RAID 0 failing over the next 3 years very high? How reliable are RAID 0's?

If one drive fails, then you lose data on both drives.

However, the likelyhood of failure (for each drive) does not increase.

Keep in mind that if you only have one drive, it can still fail and wipe all you data.

THere is about a 5 percent chance of the array coming down, far too high a chance for me to ever take it. I'd say..over the next 3 years, I doubt it would last that long. THough, I also doubt you'll have the drives that long anyways, if you're on OCN. Most people (like me) switch hardware every maybe 4 months
