HDD Problem, long vista load time, windows explorer crashes

Thread Starter
first of, hello!

i wanted to post this experience i'm having right now in hopes of helping other people with a problem i encountered, and also that someone may be of help to my current problem.

to be succinct (to try), after upgrading my mobo because of a corrupt bios (this happened immediately after lowering a dimm vtt, btw.. another topic altogether), i encountered some new problems to which the symptoms could be described as:

long load times while waiting for windows vista (32) to reach the logon screen (note that this was not an issue when i had initially installed XP), which typically took 6-10mins.

further, windows explorer would frequently crash, subsequently needing "shut down and restarted"... (if only to crash again).

incredibly frustrating to say the least.

i found someone else encountered similar problems on another forum, and the problems were solved by disconnecting their smoke-emitting hdd.

i realized at that moment that my secondary drive wasn't even being detected, and then when i tried to access data, the only option available was to format the hdd..

well one problem solved (long load times, crashing explorer),
but another problem encountered (*** is wrong with my hdd?!)

does anyone have any ideas as to what steps i should take next for the HDD recovery?

bios detects the hdd, so i'm led to believe that this is a logical, rather than physical problem.

any feedback is GREATLY appreciated!!
