[Project] Paint It Black

Thread Starter
I originally had intended to enter the Case Mod Competition headstrong and had great plans. Unfortunately, I can not find my hole saw at all, nor is the weather staying calm enough for me to do any kind of work outside for the most part.

I decided, since I have never done a case mod, I would just settle for something small for the time being. I can always go back and do my intended modding for another time.

My plan is to simply paint the inside of my Antec 900 Gloss Black, and end up with a dark interior. I do not have my hole saw, so I can not make my intended cable management holes. In place of that, I will go out and get extensions, of which I will carefully manage, and hide as best as possible against the black inside. Together, this should hide at least 95% of the cables, and will therefore be very well managed. I am also considering placing a card reader in the top of the case, but may or may not do that, depending on if I can pick up a proper saw since I cannot find any.

Even though this mod is very small and not very big or amazing, I still hope for it to turn out well.

I'll post pictures up after it is all finished, as right now I cannot post the pictures without having the card reader installed

The inside of the case has been primered with 3 coats with Rusto-O-Leum Gray Primer. It was sanded between each coat, and each coat was put on in 10 minute increments.

It was dried for two hours before the first layer of paint was put on.

I put on three coats of Rust-O-Leum Gloss Black and it is currently drying. It has been drying for almost 24 hours. I will wait until later on in the night for me to go check on it, and if it is properly cured, I will continue on to the next step.

I just picked up 3 Molex extensions cables, as well as a Molex-3 Pin Adapter, so that instead of running the Molex from the back fan across the motherboard to reach the management hole, I will plug it in directly to the motherboard, and hide the excess cable.

I also have picked up 2 Black SATA cables, which will do better at hiding than my Yellow SATA cables that I used before.

I am thinking about placing my IDE DVD-RW Drive at the bottom of the case, making the IDE cable have less room to travel, and will be easier to hide and should keep air flow at the minimum.

I will be moving the two Antec fans in the front up, to give better airflow to the motherboard instead of the bottom of the case. All objects including the 9600GSO should still be properly cooled still.

The card reader, if I do not end up modding the top to place it there, I will place it above the DVD-RW drive near the bottom of the case, as this case will be sitting on a desk come January. For now it will sitting on the ground.

I'll put pictures up once I actually get them.

I think this project won't be too bad for a first real project.

Good luck. Even though after 24 hours the paint will be dry to touch BE CAREFUL it will still chip easily. I painted with Ruso Uni. Gloss Cobalt Blue on my Antec 300 and about 48 hours after drying I started putting the case together and it chipped a little but it is covered up by the hdd cage. So far I have let it dry for 1 week and it is SO much more durable and does not scratch as easily. I suggest doing the same if you deriveted your case and have to put it back together. You can put the mobo in, but be careful because those chips will just ruin the look.

Me want pics! I plan on getting a 900 to mod next.
