It seems to me like you are trying to justify i7 over p2 in this thread, but secretly you are trying to justify it to yourself because you just got reamed for 1000 bucks. Did you really need a 965 over a 920, or are you just trying to let your nuts hang a little bit? It's cool man I'm not going to hate.

I am very happy that AMD got their **** together. I anticipated this CPU and that is why I bought my sig system instead of a Q6600 or a Q9450. The upgrade path is awesome, and many people out there will take the same upgrade path that I'm on with AM2+ mobos. Plus the price difference will put AMD back in the game and finally get Intels ridiculous prices down. Better products, better prices - thats what its all about.

We can quibble on semantics, dual vs triple channel memory, cf and sli support vs cf only, but at the end of the day, the P2 and i7 are looking pretty damn close so far in everything except price. And by the way, 99.99999 percent of people with computers don't care about having CF and Sli support simultaneously. IMO its useless.

Phenom 2 "FTMFW"
no reason to justify it to myself when I know for a fact which one is better... I know what the phenom is capable of and I know what the i7 is capable of second hand no need to argue about this. ill just bring this back up when it releases and more benches come out.

Wasn't everyone uber-excited about the overclocking capabilities of that motherboard? I think once Phenom II's are released we'll find out..

And why would someone go for (i.e., upgrade from AM2/AM2+) an AM3 + DDR3 setup when the supposed benefit is only up to 5%? Besides, I would assume DDR3 prices will be significantly lower 2-3 months from now when AM3 boards are released. i7 will also benefit from that, but the $delta would reduce only slightly unless INTC offers some significant price cuts (yum!).

Questions to more insightful/knowledgeable people: I find it a bit hard to believe; an AM3 motherboard will only boost performance by 5%? What additional features can we expect?

Yes In fact I can justify the need for a 965 over the 920. If you think it's for the e-peen factor then you are just wrong. Did I in any way say that the Phenom II is horrible or not worth it ?. No , infact if I was an AMD user I would have considered upgrading to Phenom II. I don't really care about price all I need is raw performance and this system has to last me a while for the amount of cash that I am spending on it. In the end it also comes down to this that the i7 965 will beat the Phenom II X4 940 even if it's on AM3. Maybe the 940 can match the lower i7's like the 920 or the 940 but It won't match it. Maybe if they upped the frequency of the chip and made a 960 it might come close to the 965 but the 965 will still be king no matter what.

Yes but you have to understand that the 965 is not very cost effective. It costs about roughly 3.3 times more than the Phenom 2 940. Is the 965 the best chip you can get? Yes. But does the 965 perform 3.3 times better than a Phenom 2 940? The answer is no.

That cost just cannot be justified. IMO if I were you I would have gone for the 920 and just overclocked it. Is it the best chip? No. But overclocking it might make it just as fast as the best chip though. It still would have lasted you a long time and at the same time would have saved you $700 that you could have maybe spend elsewhere.

I'm not sure why the 965 is such a big deal in these arguments, I've seen people running 920s at 4.4Ghz as well. So the real question is would you rather have between these?:

45nm, 920 i7, @ 4.4Ghz, for $299
or
45nm, 940 phenomII, @ 4.4Ghz, for ~$280.

Of course, this doesn't factor the price of mobos or RAM, in which case an AM2 phenomII setup will be cheaper by more. But honestly, if the only thing I had to pay for was the CPU, and from what I've seen so far, I'd get a 920 before I'd get a 940 phenomII. But honestly I'm hoping AMD puts the hurt on Intel which will force Intel to either drop prices or pull something even better than the current i7s, either way is a win.
