I would just get Mario Kart for now. The wheel is epic and the game play is very addicting. Also, hook it up to the internet if you can. It adds another dimension. Between Wii Sports, Online, and Mario Kart, you won't need another game for a while. Let them get bored of those before you move on. My wife also like Wii Play but I found it a bit unpolished compared to Wii sports, so that's your call.
Make sure you get an extra controller so you have at least two. The batteries last a long time so I wouldn't worry about rechargeable battery packs right now. We have had our playing for over a month every day and our remote still show full battery power. If you have multiple systems and only one or two inputs on your TV, make sure you get a switcher. We have one that had four inputs since our TV only has one, so we can switch between the PS2, Wii, and anything else we want to connect.
