*HELP* Sapphire HD 4850 + TT DuOrb Fitting Problems

post #1 of 11

Hey OCN,
I recently upgraded to a new rig. I bought a Sapphire HD 4850 (Newegg.com link) and a Thermaltake DuOrb VGA cooler. Here's the problem. The DuOrb won't fit on the card. The bottom of the cooler hits the capacitors. Am I hosed? Has anyone had the same issue? Thanks guys. +rep for original advice.

Can you grab a pic?
I thought that cooler should fit, but if it won't fit because of the caps, you may be out of luck
post #4 of 11
It'll fit your card, I have the same exact card and just installed that very same cooler on it yesterday. First you'll need to place the low profile screws on the holes closest to the gpu on the cooler. Next in order for it to fit properly on the sapphires you have to bend the angle of the orb up a bit about 10-15%, on each side. Then just seat it and adjust each side as necessary. Do Not Let any of the fins touch your capicators. I'll try to draw a small diagram; first one is default, next one is what it should be: Legend;
== is a fin, - piece that attaches fins to the base, _ is the base
==-_-== -> == ==
\\_/

If you have any problems let me know
ps: diagram did not come out as planned.. just move the \\_/ to the second one after the -> and it should give you an idea of what I was trying to explain

FYI: I'm using it in a sff, dropped my idle temp from 41C (original heatsink) to 32-34C (Duorb heatsink), but my full load are much higher now, not sure why; went from 79-82C (original heatsink)under full load with furmark to 90-100C under full load in furmark now =/ (Duorb heatsink)
Furmark setting: 1280x1024 windowed mode, 4x msaa for 180secs

Hey let me know what temps. your getting when/if you install the Duorb. I ended up removing it, the idles were better but the full loads were horrible with me. I'm getting 43C idle and 85C full load with the stock on the sapphire -> 700@1000. With the Duorb i was getting 32C idle and 90-100 full load 625@1000.

I have this card with the aftermarket cooler that now comes stock (the biggish one) and I can't break 70C even if I clock it to 700mhz core/1200mhz memory. not sure why when went for the extra cooling. you can run these cards above 80C and they'll still be happy, I still have a sapphire radeon AGP kicking around that was run at 90C for three years and it's still chugging happily along, the ATI GPUs are solid.

Ah you must be talking about the Toxic edition, it has a larger vga cooler and ramsinks on it. Not only that the pcb has a different layout than the one I have. I think we got jipped, cant really add any aftermarket coolers due to the placement of the caps on the board. Since the stock one covers the vrams (no contact) cant even add ramsinks =/

Hey, thanks for the responses, +rep for everyone. I haven't been on OCN for a few days, so sorry for not responding. Yeah, I messed around with the card and the cooler, and I did have to bend the DuOrb a bit, but I got the DuOrb and ramsinks (Zalman+Thermaltake brands) installed. biofly, I'll get some temp readings when I get a a chance (probably next week). I believe my temps were also in the 30-35 C range idle. And I totally agree, we got jipped with the cap placement. Horrible design on Sapphire's part. Then again, I only paid $130 (Newegg.com Black Friday deal), so I'm not really complaining.

thing is you got a non-referance design from sapphire with their own pcb layout. Your lucky the cooler fit. Coolers are made for the reference design and the non-refrence design doesn't have aftermarket coolers in mind. Watchout next time.

I'm running my card at 730/1000 with the sapphire heatsink, dont wanna go higher on the the ram cause I cant fight sinks on it. Idles at 45C, full load stable:
