Did i fry my 680i

Thread Starter
I just installed Vista 64 bit and installed 4gb of ram. 2x1gb crucial tracers 1066mhz, and 2x1gb Ballistix 800mhz. I had them running at 850 mhz. I installed all updates after a day of the OS runing fine. and after the OS rebooted from the installation it Blue Screens imediatly after the windows loading bar starts. Makes it about a quarter across the bar when it blue screens for like .5 seconds and reboots.

*** happend?

thanks

fry the motherboard probably not...you are running 2 sets of different ram with probably differing voltages and timings.

I suggest removing the Ballistix out and starting up.

Then use the other set only and see which set can run at the settings.

You will need to reinstall your RAID 0 configuration again.

I would reset all the ram to run at 800mhz and see whats up from there.

The ballistix and Tracers use the same ICs if they are all double sided, or single sided, but not mixed. OP, just run memtest on the modules individually and see if they pass. I'm thinking one/some/all of your ballistix went on you. BTW, dont run them at 2.2v or above on the 680i board, especially with 4 modules. The 680i boards really struggle to run 4 modules, and with high voltage, you can damage the board.

First, try running memtest. If it says some of the memory is bad, take out the bad memory and go from there. if it says it is all good, remove the new memory and try booting into windows again. If that doesn't fix it, try reinstalling or repairing Windows.

I put some 675 mhz memory that i know is good in it and it still did the same thing. My raid 0 is configured right. Unless you mean i need to reinstall vista on it which dont make much sense.

Yes my tracers are dual sided and my ballistix are single sided. but i was running them all at 850 at 2.0v. I have tried putting them all back to stock voltages and tested ever stick individually.

As i said i had another set of ddr2 ram that i know is good and it has the same result as the rest of my ram.

I have never had any voltage over 2.15 on the board for the memory.

and the timings for all of em was set at 5-5-5-15

well it booted to the windows vista dvd, and it attempting to repair the startup. So im going to assume that it has to load stuff to ram during that process, especially since it when through a windows loading bar for awhile. Must be a corrupted file. Weird that a fresh install of vista and a install of 71 updates would cause an error.

Hope i dont have to reformat again.
